why would diode blow on exciter

Overload? You understand the purpose of the exciter, right? If not, here is the simple explaination: Electricity is produced by moving a magnetic field through a coil. In most generators, it is a series of coils, this matters not here. The issue is the magnetic field. Permanent magnets are...

    Voltage regulator MEP002a alternative?

Good call, coyote! There are far too many charging issues with the 002/003As. The technical manuals are weak because of the arcane division of labor between levels 2 and higher.

    Voltage regulator MEP002a alternative?

That spark is from the capacitor. They store a charge, in your case, that was 44 volts or so. When shorted, capacitors will dump all their charge in one fell swoop. I got my introduction to this power when repairing a camera flash unit. These use a 300+ volt capacitor with a very large...

Proud new owner of a Tray Ration Heating System"

30 gallons is 250 pounds of water. A BTU is defined as the heat energy which increases the temperature of one pound of water 1 degree F. 80k BTU/hour should raise that amount of water by 320 degrees in an hour...that would be boiling in under 30 minutes . Three quarts per hour of diesel.

the proud owner of a MEP-004a.

Most ULSD is fine for lower pressure (3000 PSI and lower) diesel engines. It is the more modern 10k PSI and up systems which are failing from ULSD. I know some manufacturers are having problems with 20k PSI common rail high pressure fuel pumps failing. For insurance, nothing is more...

the proud owner of a MEP-004a.

VERY important with injection pumps lubricated by the diesel fuel. The multifuel engines have the lower part of the injection pump lubricated by engine oil. The down side to such pumps is fuel leaking into the lube oil is a risk.

    MEP 002A is ALIVE!

The MEP-002A is now officially SELF-MOBILE!!! The $9 pneumatic drive wheels needed a special touch to make them interface with the keyed 3/4" transaxle. These are Zytel (fiberglass-nylon) wheels with Carlisle Turf-Saver tires, meant for large fertilizer spreaders, having only 7/64" cross pin...

    Welding shop on wheels

Air arc gouging is insanely loud. But removing material like back-gouging the root pass in an all sub-arc welded seam? Nothing better. That machine will do it easily. No way I would abuse my Dynasty 200DX with air-arc gouging. 350 amp SMAW is a beast. I can weld bare handed with GTAW at...

    Looking at MEP-002a... advice

Yes, Onan provided engines for replacement in the 1990s. My 002A was made in 1986 but has a 1994 engine. The Hobbs meter was ~1200 hours and original to the set yet when I went to change the oil, there were lumps of grease in it. Grease is used to hold the governor flyballs in position during...

    Looking at MEP-002a... advice

Yes, 5000 hours is mid-life if original engine and meter. If the blower housing has the Onan tag on it with a 1990s contract date, chances are the engine is newer. The engines are Onan-made, the generator set's ID plate might have another manufaturer as the frame, control box and generator are...

    Looking at MEP-002a... advice

Meters and gauges. The seals fail, letting water in. A new suite is $500 easy. Look for rust inside the meter cases or worse, water. Water can also seep into the oil pressure gauge, the low oil pressure switch and the fuel gauge. Check to see if the fuel control lever moves freely once...

    Voltage regulator MEP002a alternative?

Missing the ground strap will also cause problems with the charging system. Looks like yours found a way to ground but that isn't right. Also check ground strap on the control cubicle. And the control panel SHOULD have a ground strap but it doesn't so don't trust the volt meter unless you...

    5 Kw Gen set identification

No. Exciter current is proportional to load but is varied to keep output voltage constant. If that regulator is toast, this one will work:http://www.power-tronics.com/PDF%20Compressed/XR500D.pdf Made in Texas. Yeah, that just happened 2cents

    Voltage regulator MEP002a alternative?

Check the engine ground! Should be near the battery. The fuel hoses are metal braid strength member, it doesn't really conduct all that well and the Parker no-skive fittings don't always make a good electrical connection. But with the engine ground gone, all current from the glow plugs is...

    Voltage regulator MEP002a alternative?

If the stator is good, a 10 amp full bridge rectifier and a 24 volt solar battery charger regulator will also work. I have seen these chargers for under $40. The bridge rectifier is under $10. If mine ever goes bad, that is what I will use.

    Voltage regulator MEP002a alternative?

Page 4-28 through page 4-30 in the -12 TM. Stator resistance of 0.60 ohm plus no short to ground (1000 ohms+ to ground from either stator lead) is the first thing I would check. Then check continuity from the regulator/fuse to main harness. In the -34, pages 7-8 and 7-9.

    5 Kw Gen set identification

The capacitor stores a charge. More importantly, it functions like a shock absorber in an automotive suspension. The module takes alternating current, changes it to direct current through a series of diodes but it still is a bit "choppy". The capacitor smooths this out to drive the exciter...

Replacing Wheel Cylinder: Parts to have ready?

EVERY "no-brake" issue I have encountered with M35A2s has been due to inferior wheel cylinders which use the cylindrical springs without cup expanders. The cups fail to seal, brake fluid fills the area between the boots and cups, causing the pistons and shoes to retract. Every instance was...

Remove the Genhead on 002A - Stumped, As Usual

The TMs are written by committee from information provided by contractors, updated only after multiple signatures and reviews by generals who have not the foggiest clue what they are signing and updated by a documentation clerk in the field. Still, multiple errors are common in every TM. And...

    5 Kw Gen set identification

Pre-1968 which means pre-Mobile Electric Power directive. But post-military standard gasoline engine era. What is the date of manufacture of the engine? Although that may not be conclusive... OR might be a special purpose set. Federal Stock Numbers were pre-1975, superseded by NATO Stock...
