I don't know if you can count a Dodge Dually or a Ford Excursion as a typical civilian pickup truck, I drive a 2000 F-250 crew cab with a 7.3 on a daily basis, and one day last week at work while someone else was using my truck to haul a 24 ft. gooseneck trailer I had to use the spare pickup...
Rather than replace it you might opt for a small 24V battery charger ran off the AC side of the generator, afterall the only electrical draw is the fuel pump/pumps and recharging the battery, it should only take a couple of amps DC.

Let me first say I have only the most basic of knowledge about the MEP-006, I skim over the TM a couple of years ago. Having said that if you need 277/480 Wye for a specific need there are a couple of ways of getting there.
1, The generator connection for a 12 lead unit for 240/416 wye and...
I can't tell you the output pressure of the electric fuel pumps, but can tell you the spec. on the civilian version of this engine is 12-24 psi with a mechanical pump.

I agree, check the fuel lines, particularly any elbow fittings for clogs. If you do determine it is the injection pump one of the government contractors has been dumping rebuilt pumps on ebay lately. search for MILSTD generator on ebay.

Like Speddmon said, before assuming it is the voltage regulator I would rule out the rotating rectifier, I am not sure how had it is to access on the MEP-003, however an easy test to see if your problem is the VR is to manually flash the field with a small 9-12V battery. You do this by...
After posting my initial message, I also thought about the idling issue since you had a throttle cable issue, these units are not designed to idle EVER, they are designed to be started then immediately throttle up to 1800 rpms, idling for more than a handful of seconds will burn out the voltage...
Have you tried reflashing the field by turning the switch back to the start position while it is running? There is a protection relay system that should keep the starter from engaging while the engine is running and only flash the field. This could be the easiest fix, we can go from there, it...
Your meter is probably getting confused by the distorted waveform, is the other generator that it works fine on an 1800 or 3600 rpm unit? 2 pole 3600 rpm generators like the MEP-016's have inherintly more distortion than 4 pole 1800 rpm units.

Be aware most Generac Automatic transfer switches are brain dead, and will only work correctly when connected to a Generac brand generator as they rely on the generators onboard logic circuits to control the transfer switch.

Usually when someone mentions wet stacking they are refereing to the whole series of conditions that occur when a diesel engine is ran at low load, the oily buildup in the exhuast is just part of the end result that starts with build up on the wiper rings in the cylinders which leads to...
Your lucky down here near the gulf coast I have not seen a good looking MEP-002 of any type within reasonable driving distance sell for much under $1,000 once you add in fees in the last year. In fact one nearby with a crushed control box went for over $700 on GL a few weeks ago.
I bought a Kohler commercial unit from GL a couple of years ago, the muffler and exhaust had been removed and a plastic bag taped over the exhaust manifold, which had unfortunately rotted away, leaving me with a gallon or so of water in the oil pan and a lightly seized engine. There are a...
I am not going to tell you that a 30 kw MEP-005a is too large for your house, but I will tell you that it is larger than is needed for the vast majority of houses. I have a 30KW diesel generator at my elderly mother's house and I feel it is the right size generator for the application. In this...
It can be done, someone either here or over on the smokstak board was talking about it a couple of months ago, (either MEP-004a or MEP-005a, they are close cousins) it seems someone in the Carolinas is rewiring them for single phase and selling them. I am not sure how much needs to be done to...
Keep in mind that many parallel dual generator systems were not designed to run in parallel as a continuous combined load system, instead they were designed to provide continuous power to some application, so that they may be shut down individually for maintenance without having an interruption...
Another thing to keep in mind, regardless of the type of generator you buy, if it breaks down during actual emergency chances are parts/service availability is a moot point unless you have the spare parts on hand and can fix it yourself. The repair shops will be full of generators brought in by...
One more thought, if you do end up buying a MEP-016B (built by Onan)) / MEP-002a or MEP-003a (militarized Onan engine) and need help repairing it one of the very helpful Onan Experts on the Smokstak board lives only about 100 miles north of you up I-45.
