A few more thoughts on your generator, while browsing GL, I found the closed listing for the generator you won, along with its twin that was sitting next to it. Based partly on photos of the twin, it appears your DJB/DJE is a later model with the YD series generator end, not the older...
I am fairly sure it is an Onan J series generator, I am guessing a DJB hard to say with those photos though, try posting over on the SmokStak Onan generator section.

p.s. the more I look at it, the more I think it may be a DJE
I was just wondering if things like this also happen to you? Yesterday while eating lunch with some co-workers at a local mexican place somone pulls into the parking lot to turn around pulling a trailer with a large tan camo painted piece of equipment. One of my co-workers remarks, I wonder...
I have read that the 002/003 use the same glow plugs as their Civilian Onan DJC, RDJF, etc. series powered 12 V counterparts, just with 2 wired in series to use on the 24V system. I don't know if it is true though, but it does make sense.
I now know that it does not want to start without using the glow plugs when the low has made it down to 24 degrees. About 10 seconds on the glow plugs and it fires right up though, with just a few puffs of smoke.

I am considering on bidding on a couple of items from a GSA auction, and I was wondering if anyone here has any words of wisdom on dealing with them. I have bought a dozen or so items through GL and bid on many more, but this will be my first time dealing with GSA.

I guess it depends on what you mean by good. I have only put about 25-30 hours on mine since buying it last summer with about 950 hours showing on the meter, I use it to for power at my shed in the back yard about 150 feet from the house. These units are not exactly small and portable with...
I have bought 3 generators from GL,
a 3KW MEP-701a, filled with fluids, connected a good battery and it fired up, only problem was a small pinhole leak in the oil cooler, replacement cooler from ebay $40
a 30KW Kohler diesel skid mounted industrial generator, had been removed from an indoor...
Fred, that sounds like the diesel powered Miller Big-D2 out at my families farm, 200A 100% duty cycle for welding, but only 2.5 KVA on the AC generator side at 120V (could be rewired for 240).

I also have a MEP-016b/701a there is no household 120/240 sinlge phase connection on these sets, there is single phase is 120V only, 240V only, there is a 3 phase 120/208 mode that may work for what you need if your 230 volt load is really 208-230, then there is a strange 120V only 3 phase...
Fred, one more thing to remember, depending on your loads, how you plan to connect your generator, etc. You might be able to get that 1/3 output back as an separate 120V only line. Perhaps you have a well pump that could run off 5KW's of 120V AC, or maybe an RV with a 30-50 amp 120V only...
I agree, however many particularly newer appliances have switch mode power supplies, and therefore no need to reconfigure. For the air conditioning/heating systems I would certainly suggest talking with your local installer/professional.

It makes no sense to me why many things sell for the prices they do on GL, sometimes that is high, sometimes it is low. With these 400 hz generators I suspect a fair number are to people that don't know better, or like you did not read the fine print. I can see some people needing only...
Ok, let me jump in a couple of issues,
In the case of the MEP-004 and MEP-005 the generator end is a 12 lead reconnectable generator, however the connection board system that comes with it is limited to the few quick change options Speddmon has already mentioned. The majority of civilian 12...
$1,300 or so makes sense to me, just take a look at ebay for asking prices on running used industrial diesel engines in this size range. At the moment there is a "running" White D198 from a military generator (probably 20kw) with an asking price of $1,500 and it just goes up from there. I...
I am not sure how you feel about your time vs. money, but at $2,500 or so you could probably scrap out the generator end (copper, etc) for a few hundred dollars, and make your money back off selling off the engine. This is assuming it is in good condition.

The short answer is the 400 hz units are useless unless you need a run a big resistive load (electric heating elements, light bulbs etc. Nothing with a motor in it). Conversion to 60 hz is not practical (replace generator end, plus generator controls, etc.), all these are really good for is...
It sounds like you have picked up a great deal. There is someone on ebay that has fuel filters for sale (I bought one about a month or two ago for about $20), they are poorly listed though, search "onan fuel filter kit" as to the oil filter there is a NAPA filter that works, mine (701a, 016b...
I agree, the best deals seem to be on the items that are the most poorly listed, One other thing check back often as I have seen items listed as little as 3 days before the auction opens selling along side things that have been listed for a month or more.
