also ( far from home or just fail)..the trucks will usually allways start with a (very) short tow start..even when cranking with the sarter will not. And actually I have repaired these pumps..I just angle grind the case open ( off the old weld) to repair or replcace veins or replace brushes...

agree with m35 tom , Before towing and or checking anything else have a look at the drive line. with all the smoke and rattles..AND sparks ..could that be gears clutch xfr department! or..a uj , coupling , or other rotating part?? gradually seizing burning up..then locking up...

when you run on obtained wmo you will get a variety of oils from a variety of engine oil changes..So..some has high cetain rating , some not so high etc.
and of course its all mixed up (nearly!)..so as it setles in "layers" well..it burns in layers...and if it it was not cleaned...

best to use (operate) the winch from inside the cab. Engage dog clutch then engage / disengage from the cab controls. ( I never operate outside ) (as) the dog clutch never releases when all else is engaged aniway. and it is safer. (T.M.s)

Ive had it with glow plugs and relays etc! On the F350 ambulance I just purchased from dispoal agent.."oh we couldn't start i" "but" (he had said!)... Examined it today..Wires cut to pre-heat relay and solenoid...military didt'nt even bother to just pull the connectors apart...
