    So made some progress, finally Ready to remove the nose piece I have a concern, with the noise piece tight to the transfer case , the bottom companion flange turns freely As I start to separate the noise piece the companion flange binds. Is it ok to continue to force the noise piece off?

    Thanks I did find that and yes looks like I was trying to do it wrong, I will re-secure the upper retaining ring , get the snap ring back on then pull the companion flange. Hopefully will be able to pull the nose off then.

    Did find the brake down of the transfer case in the tm. form what I am reading looks like that upper shaft stays in place, I need to pull the companion flange, then the nose piece will have the clearance necessary to slide off. course if you have done the job would love any pointers! thanks

    Thanks ,for the advice . Had decided that the M39 manual was not right for me, but will start studying. as for the grease for the rears, guess I am going to brake down and get those huge sockets. Will have to fugue out the cork plugs.... only Jeep would come up with that.

    Speaking of no grease, the fronts were just fine with grease, all of the rears were bathed in axle oil, guess your saying I have multiple problem, first, it’s not supposed to have axle oil out to that bearing on the rear axles and 2nd should be coated with grease.

    I was able to finish my job the other day. One side the drum slid right off. The other side was hard, no real way to get behind the drum to help it off. Ended up putting a couple of the lug nuts back on and used my mondo puller to ease it off, that actually worked well. Used tie down straps...

    Read the other thread, it was helpful, Hit the gearbox a few times, no luck Had some type of red hydraulic oil in the reservoir, drained it and the gearbox oil, replaced both with 10w hydraulic oil from NAPA, no luck next I guess is a pressure test of the pump. Any idea on the pressure value...

    I should be able to pull off a pressure test will have to ask a buddy if he has one that will hook up.. that diverted valve is interesting. I’ll try the old Korean War trick and hit the gearbox with a hammer “ gently “ if the valve is sticking that might do the trick. Thanks, I’ll try tomorrow
