Reference post 14: the fuel filter that was bypassed is on the firewall on the driver's side of the truck ? If this new filter has been replaced and the truck spits and sputters check for a filter in the tank.
Table 2-3 on pages 2-130 & 131 lists the weights of various materials expected to be hauled in 5 yard dump trucks. Most of these commodities will cube out before they weight out. A "snow cone" load of wet clay will overload the chassis. Table 2-3 is in the previously referenced TM...
Using M 817 dump body is "quarry mode" where load goes over top of gate. Care must be taken when changing from top to bottom hinge that you do not get both sides released at the same time as this will allow that very heavy gate to fall off which is usually a bad thing.
Read the reading: then operators manual, in the case of a M817 is TM 9-2320-260-10 explains how the tail gate works. and yes it can be used to spread gravel by manipulating the chains on the gate when the gate is in the top hinged moie.
This truck may have the fuel filter in the gas tank as I do not see one under the voltage regulator on the driver's side of the fire wall. There is a plate that can be removed in the cargo body floor to determine if this is so. If the truck sat a long time and water accumulated the thye bottom...
Post 3 is the straight skinny. Lube everything. Grease is cheap parts are expensive. Be guided accordingly. Hope the chain draped over the axle didn't crimp the brake line that runs there. If you read the operator's manual you would know there are anchor points on the chassis that will prevent...
Change all the fluids, inspect the tires carefully for faults such as dry rot or checking. Get and read the pubs: operator's manual, organizational maintenance manual, parts book, lubrication order. These are available on line or in paper at swap meets. Lubricate everything: hinges, door...
Reference post 8867 and color: this "mud" shade is apparently one of the Army's alternatives to basic OD which would have been applied when the truck was new. Is the dashboard and cab interior the same color ? My M37 was the same color when it was surplused out though I am sure it was not the...
The best kept secret in the US Military is its' publication system. Get the pubs and read the reading: operator's manual, organizational manual, parts book, lubrication order. For a truck this new they should be available in digital form. Grease is cheap. Parts cost money. Air is free, tires...
Inevitably the question will come up about putting an Allison or a roadranger in a M 809 series truck or a deuce. Remember these vehicles have an interlock between the transmission and the transfer case so the transfer case knows which direction the transmission is going. So ya you can get one...
Someone did you a favor by buying this beast out from under you. It is difficult to find something as old as a M38 that isn't either rusted out, abused to death, or hacked and modded to death by POs. Gee, I wonder what this wire does ? And so on.
By the time of the RVN experience the 9-2320-212-10,20 and LO series of pubs were issued Korean pubs combine elements of today's -10 and -20 manuals in one book T%M9-8030. These pubs will list the capacities of all gear cases and the products that were authorized to fill them at the time of...
IN RVN I remember seeing gas cans with red caps and diesel cans with yellow caps and the fuel caps on the trucks were painted the same as some of our illiterate troops could not read lettered cans. The fuel blivets were also like color coded. Water cans could be distinguished from fuel cans as...
Reference post 2: Applicable Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard requires some type of brake on any trailer RATED for over 3000 pounds never mind carrying 4500 pounds. LEOs or DOTs will discover this breach when the inevitable at fault accident occurs and then you will be surrounded by a...
Reference post 6: The stock transmission is direct drive. If you go to an overdriven transmission the truck will go faster. But then again if you want to go fast you could get a KW or a Pete with double Os in it and go 100 mph loaded no problem.
Is this old enough to qualify for historic plates in your state. The feds think anything weighing more than 26000# is a "commercial vehicle" and all sorts of nasty compliance issues creep in when that threshold is crossed. Try a different MV office ?
Grease is cheap. Parts cost money. Be guided accordingly. All branches bought these trucks the only difference being color: OD for the Army, Gray for the Navy, Blue for the Air Force and a different shade of green for the Marines. Example shown was built for the Navy in 1965.
