I don't remember ever having an issue doing it. I know I reuse the original rubber. Can't remember if I reuse the metal shell or not but I don't specifically remember omitting it. I do remember it being more difficult to clamp.
It really does work great, and doesn't depend on the iffy ground to the fender to function properly and not burn up. Of course they aren't waterproof, but whatever.

Connect the heater power feed wire that provides power to the switch to wire #55 with a 3 way " Y" connector near the flame heater switch. Make sure you connect to the leg of 55 that powers up when the master switch is turned on. One side is hot when the master is on, and one leg goes from flame...
Loving the Cummins so far. It's quite a bit shorter so it gives plenty of room for a large air to air charge cooler. It's also significantly lighter than either the multifuel or the Dt466.
And also, check your ground wire from your batteries where it connects to the frame. The terminals like to break off right at the frame and you can't see it unless you pull the battery box out.
Fuel tank and associated parts cleaned, primed, painted, and assembled.
Believe it or not, the lower pictured fuse block actually was functional. I restored another complete pump hanger and fuse holder assembly for use though.
