The Army does not use manufacturer's VIN numbers for record keeping purposes. A registration number is assigned upon receipt and stays with the vehicle until it is surplused out. Back in the day the registration numbers were painted on the sides of the hood. When camouflage paint came in they...
Vehicle may have been overhauled to 2015 as CARC radar dispersant paint was applied to it at that time. This would have to be done at the General Support or Depot level as lower echelon units would not be authorized to apply CARC paint
Reference post 8: numbers were originally stenciled in white When camouflage paint came in they were black. Still later they became black with, in the case of green equipment, black with a tan background as shown in post 1. Some units painted a tan oval to display the numbers others just...
The Army has technical bulletins on how to apply bumper markings to vehicles. I can't find mine so I do not know what the number is. There was also a numbering scheme; X would be #5 the commander #6, S-4 #4 etc. Unit would be on the passenger's side and fleet number on driver's side. Jeeps used...
Reference above: GAA is frowned upon as it attracts grit which will abrade the cable. Vehicle TM includes preservation procedures for vehicles to be stored and some type of cosmoline is authorized if the vehicle is entering storage. This is supposed to cleaned off when the vehicle is returned...
Check applicable vehicle LO. Most call for OE10. Wind winch cable up neatly. Place absorbent pad under winch. Pour oil over capstan and will soak into wick in winch cable. I have unwound winch cables a year after doing this and found center still soaked in oil.
As stated post 3 it is the vent from the hydrovac to the atmosphere via the air plenum. Transmission and transfer case probably also vented same way. This was part of the military's provision for deep water fording capabilities. Vents on axles are also military specific to keep water out
A problem to solve would be, if you wish to preserve the all when drive, is the rodded shift linkage between the transmission and the transfer case which keeps the transfer case oriented to which direction the transmission is going. This function on a 809 series etc is air operated with valves...
I had a M36WW that was extremely difficult to steer at any speed under 10mph. M35s and 813s are both available with and without winches and drop sides . Both can be had with or without heaters and hard tops. Both have manual transmissions and air over hydraulic brakes Both have 24v electrical...
Picture in post 8 shows inflating a tire with a clip on chuck. Also visible are a 24v 3/4" impact wrench and a can of "never seize" to put on the lug nuts if there is any hope of getting them off again in this lifetime.
If the rims on your bus are as those used on M37s, M35s, M8o9s etc they are not completely lethal if handled right. The problem is when reassembled and inflated the lock ring may separate from the rim and do damage to the tire mechanic. Several procedures are available to control this: 1...
Reference to post 76: if you use the emergency shut off handle in the cab to stop the engine on a 809 series truck or a 923etc it is necessary to visit under the hood and restore this valve to the run position or the engine will not start. This is because pushing in the handle like on a M35A2...
Reference post 55 of 08.02.2018 describing engine stalling problem. In the event of a total electric failure the solenoid will shut the engine down in the absence of electrons to energize it. If you can get the truck slaved or pull start it the engine will run if you put the fuel pump in bypass...
The actual cable is assembled with eye terminations for either the ground or positive. The military uses the double nut battery connectors for, among other reasons, to facilitate removing the battery box as a unit in artic climes for storage in a heated area. This design negates the risk to...
Read the reading: get an 0perator's manual (-10), organizational maintenance manual (-20), and a lubrication order for starters. Grease is cheap; parts cost money. Be guided accordingly. Data plate on dashboard will list publications pertinent to this vehicle. Same are available either on line...
Vehicle has a one lever transfer shifter, no BO lights or NATO light switch, one piece windshield. However speculate it could have been made either by Kaiser Jeep or one of their licensees overseas for a military customer. Remember while serving in sunny southeast Asia that our Vietnamese allies...
The numbers painted on the hood are the vehicle's registration number or "hood number" The Army did not use the manufacturer's serial number for record keeping purposes. After the change to camouflage paint in 1985 the registration number was displayed inside the doors. If you use the truck in...
