Remember to A1 is a 915 with a different transmission and built by AM General. The freightliners came later. Mine is box stock and goes 58 miles an hour until it runs out of fuel.
If you find engine oil in the water the oil cooler may be leaking. The oil goes into the water because the oil presssure uis higher than the water pressure. Oil enterin g through the cooler will cause eventual discharge of fluid from the radiator overflow.
Remember, CDL weight thresholds are based on the rated weight of the vehicle as displayed on the required data plate attached to the cab. The registered weight is not a factor other than it can not exceed the rated weight.
If you have a circut diagram it will tell what pin on the plug that attaches to the back of the switch is hot from the starfter and what wire is the headlight circut. If there is power up to the switch jump the plug and see if anything lights. No power to the switch ? Solve that problem. Other...

The platform or chassis height of a M818 with stock tires is simiilar to many civilian tractor chassis. The height is gained with the double trunion fifth wheel. Installing a 48" high fifth wheel witrh or without a slider is strickly an exercise in blacksmith work.
Think about getting the lubrication order for the vehicle possibly available on jatonka's site and these questions will be answered. I recall they took OE10 as transmission fluid which was probably poured in through the tube the dip stick is in which is accessed through a trap door in the cab...
