My M35A2 Project aka Big Betty

Thank you, but I don't understand your question. Performance drawbacks related to what?

    Front Axle Engagement

I don't recall the speed, but it was as I approached the end of a paved road to transition onto a muddy, unpaved road. I was probably rolling about 15-20 MPH at that point. It engaged with no problem. Incidentally, I sometimes disengage the front axle while in motion as well. If I'm on a...

Cleaning Dirt From Interior of Instrument Panel

Definitely worth noting. Denatured alcohol is very flammable, so don't smoke or get it near a flame. Also, make sure any energized circuits are completely dead so there is no chance of a spark.

Cleaning Dirt From Interior of Instrument Panel

Just be careful of any decals or lettering. The alcohol will remove ink and glue. Use a soft brush to do the cleaning work. I use compressed air with a blow gun to blow it dry. Just one thought about using compressed air. You never know what is in the dust on these trucks. I wouldn't blast the...

    Front Axle Engagement

I know it's just an opinion, but I have also engaged the front axle while rolling. No load, no spinning, but rolling. No bad noises, no problems. Based on the design, there should be no problems so long as the fronts and rears are turning the same speed, but you gotta drive your own truck. If...

Cleaning Dirt From Interior of Instrument Panel

Acetone is very bad for plastic. Don't use it on the gauges!

Cleaning Dirt From Interior of Instrument Panel

The back side of my instrument cluster was covered in a thick layer of dirt, dust, and mud dauber nests. A spray bottle of anything was just going to make mud. I worried about the soap and water option, given that the gauges aren't sealed. I didn't want the soapy water inside them. I used a...

M35A2 Frame Up Restore Labor of Love

I'm jealous and green with envy. Beautiful truck. One day I hope to be able to do the same thing to my Betty.

    where can i get paint?

Sounds like a good thing to me. Send a PM to PATRACY or CLINTO regarding the issue of using the SS name. I don't see a problem, but that's above my pay grade.

    where can i get paint?

Adam, I didn't mean to hijack your thread, but I hope we provided some useful info for you there. Paint style, type, color, brand, etc. seems to be one of those topics that generate endless debate, much like the "what kind of oil", and "how big a tire will fit" topics. It depends on what you...

    Merc1973's First Deuce Build Thread

Congratulations. It looks like a good truck. If the type and age of the oil isn't known, new filters and fresh oil would be a good idea. Look in the fuel tank too and see if it's clean. Having a bunch of junk in the fuel is a common issue with trucks that have say for a while. Check the...

    where can i get paint?

Take a look at this older thread. It contains a lot of paint code information. There's a formula there for Olive Drab (24087) that may work for you. http://www.steelsoldiers.com/showthread.php?66973-Exterior-Latex-Acrylic-House-Paints

    where can i get paint?

I found an interesting and informative article about the history and development of military Olive Drab paint. The article is about accurately getting military scale models painted correctly, but the information applies to actual vehicles as well...

    where can i get paint?

Looks like the FS paint code recognized as OD Green is 33070. Take a look at this: http://olive-drab.com/od_mvg_odpaint.php

    where can i get paint?

The 817 looks like it is CARC 383 Green with some age on it, except for the front bumper. The only 686 I'm familiar with is Tan (Desert Tan).

    where can i get paint?

The best I can offer you at this point is to use the forum search function on the term "OD Green code." There are numerous threads about custom mixes for versions of OD Green. You'll have to evaluate the various photos and custom paint mixes and determine which you like best. Some are dark...

    where can i get paint?

I added a couple of FS codes where you had blanks. I need to go verify the correct number for OD Green. I think white is just common flat white, but I'll look.

    where can i get paint?

Toby, I used the Premium Plus Ultra because I knew I would be painting over a variety of surfaces: clean old paint; newly repaired and prepared metal; wood; and fiberglass. The integrated primer may be overkill but I tend to go big or go home, if you know what I mean. The evidence is that it...

    where can i get paint?

Adam, you say you want OD green. You might want to get some small samples of the 383 green (FS34094), Dark Green (FS34082) and Field Drab (FS33105) and see which (if any) satisfies you. 383 green is a bright green (think new leaves), especially when it first goes on. It darkens up some over a...

    where can i get paint?

I have not tried to use the FSS codes at Lowe's, but they are a GSA supplier, so perhaps they too, have the FSS codes plugged into their paint computer. The flat paint does allow brush and roller painting with good results. I've seen several trucks with roll-on paint jobs and some looked...
