A little progress today and a problem discovered and corrected. Generator pulley did not line up with the water pump and crank pulleys. Could not find a correct replacement pulley so Ghostdriver perloined the generator off my M37.
The M37b1's are reported to have some metal differences in the body sheet metal formulations from earlier models. This assertion was due to the later trucks getting rusty quicker. Who know for sure, it might have been due to a different paint primer. In any case, the M37 had a long production...
Your heat riser modification ought to work. There are actually two types of risers. The one I have seen most often on military 230 Dodge engines is a manually adjustable where you loosen a screw and move the riser deflector and tighten the screw. The other is a bimetallic spring that opens or...
It is true that the 700R4 has a wider spread of gears. And there are rebuilders who can make them almost bullet proof. But the cost of up-toughening is considerable. The basic TH400 is pretty stout from the get-go and it does not cost too much to do some stoutness upgrades. Changing the rear...
:ditto:
A word about pre-lubing the engine. My daughter is currently installing an M43 engine rebuilt 12 years ago by a reputable rebuilder. Given the age of the rebuild, we went the extra step of pre-filling the oil filter and making sure oil was poured into the oil galley connection so that...
You won't get movement with a dowel in the spark plug hole. It is not centered over the piston. Over the #6 pistion there is a small plug in the head for the purpose of finding TDC. Use that with your dowel rod. #1 and #6 come to the top of the bore at the same time.
Try to feel the compression...
About Self Energizing and Huck style brakes ~~ Not to be too long winded, but Huck brakes which were an improvement over their predecessors, attempt to push both front and rear shoes symmetrically to the drum. There are adjustable anchor pins at the bottom of each shoe. Each shoe operates...
Ghostdriver and I did some work today that we thought might allow us to start her engine. Close only counts in horse shoes. We did get some burps, but we seem to be lacking fuel. We will inspect the fuel filter in the tank first and then progress through the carb.
I hate to horn in on this awesome thread, but I have a similar question to the OP. My daughter is nearing a repaint of her 1958 M43 and we were wondering about unit markings for her truck. It appears to be a liberated vehicle because the glove box ID plates are removed and there is a USMC tag on...
Same-same. In the interest of not having lots of different parts to stock or ship they are the same. Because the brakes are Hauck type, both the front and rear bores are the same. M37 brakes are not self actuating so they are a little less powerful, but they work equally in either direction.
Ghostdriver, and the rest of the family had to sort cattle so we could send come calves to the sale yard Monday morning. That made for a short day working on the M43. However, some things got accomplished and the photos are attached. Zouts comments about respirators is well taken. They were left...
I too have limped home in front wheel drive (more than once). That was the reason I started collecting M37 parts trucks. I just needed a source of axles. If you collect enough parts trucks, you notice mostly what's missing are long side rear axles.
