Over the last 40 years I have used rustoleum primer with good results. I used POR15 on one project about 15 years ago and it did not adhere as well to the non-rusted metal as well as I had hoped.
I would agree with your assessment sir, especially considering the age of truck. She ought to look pretty good after I sandblast, prime and put a couple coats of 24087 on her.
When I removed the transfer case from the M47 today I noticed the hole for the transfer case mount does not look very professional. Does the hole in the pic below look factory?
I am glad you got it home.
The front axle on my M47 is leaking from the exact same place and input flange on the front axle spins by hand as well....Another thing on the project list.
I wish I had a wrecker. I used my Massey Ferguson 30B loader to lift off the cab (see the red beastie to the right of the truck in 2nd picture in post #69).
You may want to jack each wheel off the ground to see if any of your brake shoes are stuck to the drum.
Based on the fact your rear wheels spin when trying to backup would indicate the issue may be with the front brakes.
I bought a 1951 REO M47 in the Fall of 2013 for $1500. It ran and stopped, but had a leaking water pump, plywood sheet metal custom built hardtop, the cab was rusted out and was basically in need of a complete restoration.
You can see pics of my M47 on the thread at the link below...
After I get the old girl stripped down to the frame my first project will be to remove the seriously tweaked rear cross member.
It looks like someone connected a hook to the lower right rear part of the cross member and let her rip.
Its a shame they did not put a little more thought into where...
