The first and second photos are of the amphib. First pic. shows the bed sides down and the second they are removed. They must be up and the seals pressurized to float. They are all built by Ford with the same basic chassis and powertrain.

Thanks for the heads up Bjorn, I was afraid of the flambe effect and never tried to start mine. I later heard the the gassoline ones were the real danger but I'd do numerous test firings outside the truck before using one inside it.

Ah yes, the ones used in the M656,757 and 791 vehicles.

They are about 3" smaller than the 395's he's running now, he'll loose some of his 60 mph cruising ability. His truck turns 2500 rpm @ 60 MPH. I never liked pushing that engine past 2500 rpm, the transmission shifts (@ full throttle) at about 2450-2500.

I'm not so sure I agree about removing the driveshafts. Unless you intend to haul 10 ton loads, tire slippage should take care of the problem. I have 8 vehicles that have no differential between axles and they survive by tire slippage alone. The drivetrain in the 656 is much more robust than...

There just isn't enough weight over those rear axles to get traction. I bet if you put 4-5 tons in the back it would go right up in 4wd. It is really weight biased to the front, especially with that big hurkin' winch and steel bumper up there. :-D I bet Bjorn's 757 wouldn't tackle wet grass...

Exactly right, although I had to do mine ALONE and do it with the top on the truck. It wasn't that hard, just think it through before trying to move a 4' cover through a 3' hole :wink: You can remove it out through the passenger door, if done carefully. Removing the top would make it an easy...

He's only driven it off-road at under 20 mph, I don't recall having to turn it back to center but then again, I drive so many different vehicles I may have forgotten.

Now you know why it was dubbed the "Mover", it just plain moves out for an old truck. Only place I found it unplesant was on severe washboards on hairpin turns, nothing is nice in those conditions and it did much better than the jeeps or the deuces.

Gosh, I thought is was kinda silly pulling my 5 ton on a trailer behind my F450. I needed to engage 8x8 to get up my steel dove tail though . . .

It was an AWESOME truck and fun to drive. I loved seeing the look on the new owners face after his first drive, he looked elated on how easy it was. The paint was worn out but being aluminum, he can take his time, it isn't going anywhere.

Right on Bjorn, I think got a weight just over 17k when leaving the dump empty. It worked the F450 pretty hard but it didn't complain. On the good side I got to see the truck move from the outside for the first time and it was really cool to see it go through some kinda swampy area in 4...

If I go by the numbers I know and the listed weight of the 656 I was at 32,000. But if I use the numbers and the scale weights of the 656 I had from the "dump" I was at about 34,000. Not quite the 35,500 I got below. I don't stop at scales, I drive by 'em. :twisted:

I delivered my Ford M656 to it's new home 110 miles from here. It got a ride behind another Ford, just 39 years younger. It was sad to see the old girl go but I'm happy for its new owner, he seems to love it.

I drove mine today, took a prospective buyer for a ride, he wasn't ready to try it himself but he liked it a lot. It was fun driving the old girl again. Too bad so many of the 300 went to the smelter, they are an awesome truck. The guy seemed to be really impressed with the ride unladen and...
