    European Member List

Here's a video from the late great garage sale during the draw-down in the 90's. I know the Major they interviewed in the video. Long since retired from the Army but still serving as an instructor. He had some great stories of POMCUS disposal/retrograde and of being the officer in charge of the...

    MERDC and LMTV

BK, good call. M1001/1002/1013/1014 trucks are cabover, the pattern might be close enough. Or just adapt an M809 or M44 series pattern. Trouble is I can't find a pattern for M1001 trucks. TB 43-0147 from DEC 1975, TB-0147 Change2 from JUN 1980 don't have them. Both are too early for M1001...

What did you do to your deuce this week?

Those don't appear to be the same truck. Both look like a postwar conversions on CCKW chassis.

    LMTV Radio Antenna Question(s)

The most common standard antenna is an AS-3900. Another is an AS-3916. Your base is most likely for an AS-3900. Both are for SINCGARS radios, 30-88 MHz.

M8 E2 Cargo Tractor tracked, First post

I hope that M8 doesn’t get butchered. It’s a rare thing to see. Nicely done wrecker conversion too. There were wrecker variants of the M8. Fred Crimson mentioned two types, designated T4, but he states the wrecker body was issued as a kit, thus it appears it didn’t get a different “M”...

    War pics questions

Photo looks like early OIF, ‘03-04 timeframe. 54EN BN at the time was part of 130th EN BDE but detached to 3ID during the breach and subsequent attack into Iraq. That does look like a 54EN HMMWV, if so the bumper numbers are for 130th Engineer Brigade, 54th Engineer Battalion, B Company, vehicle...

    War pics questions

Nets look like general purpose cargo nets. Bag hanging from the pillar under the M240 machine gun is a M40 protective mask carrier. Rolled up tarps look like covers designed to camouflage the vehicle and perhaps protect interior from weather. On the tailgate is a combat identification panel...

    Humvee Radio

There isn’t a COMSEC card in a RT-1439, they required a separate COMSEC device such as a KY-57. 1439s are called “non-ICOM” SINCGARS, meaning they don’t have integrated COMSEC. COMSEC cards are controlled. The US military does not release them to the public. There are some in private hands...

    M20A1B1 Bazooka Question

Bazooka Charlie! Great story of innovation and bravery. I'm surprised that L-4 could carry the six bazookas AND his giant brass ones.

HMMWV Front Shackle mount/Tow Point dimensions

I want something surface mount, and I need to attach a medium tow bar as well as recovery points. I considered M151 shackle mounts, but they are top mount and I don't want to grind off the large rivets that attach my bumper to the frame. I also considered M35 shackle mounts, but the large size...

HMMWV Front Shackle mount/Tow Point dimensions

Looks like about 4.5"-5". Shoot, just a hair too long. I've got about 4.125" to work with. I think an overhanging mount would get the job done, but would look terrible. Thanks for the help 90Jimmy!

HMMWV Front Shackle mount/Tow Point dimensions

90Jimmy, thanks for the work on that. I didn't even consider those. Springer, those are exactly what I was referring to. I'm looking to put a set on the front of my J53 to primarily add a connection point for a medium towbar. Problem is I'm not sure if they are too long to fit on the bumper.

HMMWV Front Shackle mount/Tow Point dimensions

Does anyone have the dimensions of a HMMWV front tow point/shackle mount? Specifically I need the overall length and bolt spread. I am thinking of mounting a set to the front of a Jeep.

    R.I.P.--73M819--Ron Harris

This is incredibly sad news. I only met Ron a few times, but I really enjoyed talking with him. I always enjoyed reading his posts here too. I was struck by his willingness to help anyone with anything. He certainly contributed a lot to our community here on SS. Our prayer are with his family...

Prisoner from Lansing, KS escapes in M929.

Lansing is not far from me. Glad he fled in the opposite direction. I grew up in a small town that was home to a federal prison and had several other correctional facilities nearby. I could see the federal prison from my home. In the 18 years I lived there I recall a couple escapes. I always...

Looking to customize my shifter knob if possible?

The button issue is problematic. I was thinking in terms of a standard transmission. I’m don’t exactly know what constitutes “unusual”, I’m not terribly creative. However, I’m sure some other steelsoldier has a great idea for an unusual shifter!

Looking to customize my shifter knob if possible?

I had a thought the other day that the hilt end of a bayonet might make an interesting shift knob. Cut the blade the appropriate length below the crosspiece then weld on a threaded female portion to accept the shifter rod. I suppose you could tack directly to the end of the shifter, but I think...
