You absolutely need at minimum an interlock so that only one source may be active at one time.
The generator breaker in the panel is typically sized in a way to protect the wire. The generator breaker protects the generator from overload.
The other big thing to look at is grounding and...
on these units no, in other applications I have seen some alloys get stiff from excessive mechanical force (think of how a paperclip gets brittle form bending it several times)
2 wires for Volt sensing. 2 for field. Then there needs to be something to inject power to the field to start the head. That's where a resistor comes in. It sounds intimidating but it's quite easy.

I have not purchased this exact model, the last one I had to get was from ebay. I'd say it's a good day to Google.

If you order the avr, let me know when it arrives. I'll find some time to walk you through install. It should be fairly easy

I did one on a 005, it wasn't this exact avr, but it was successful and loadbanked to 115% rated load. (Should have seen the ash and soot raining down from it)

In my opinion, some oil in fuel is better for the older sets anyway as newer diesel is less lubricative than the current fuel. I considered doing it with my 004, the only reason I didn't is lack of time.

You really should create a new thread for it, but anyway it's probably a seal between the injection pump and engine. If you dont have the skills for it any diesel shop should be able to do it
