On auto bid you put in your "max amount"
As others bid, the software automagicly ups your bid by the next increment. Increments vary, depending on what the bid is up to .. there is a table in the FAQ the tells you what the increment is.

I guess you could do it that way if you wanted. There is another thread on here I read recently that talked about a battery coming loose and grounding out ... it didn't sound very pretty.
So I would recommend how ever you choose to do it you make sure they are "tied" down and won't shift...
