Kinda got carried away..... M1028 rebuild

I got the bed off and loaded onto my trailer. I was unsure how to transport the bed the 40 miles to Barry's metal fabrication shop, and also how he was going to be able to easily access the inner and outer sides of the work. The bed would not fit in-between the rails of my trailer, so I came...

Kinda got carried away..... M1028 rebuild

I see your tanks are black. Are they painted steel or plastic?

Kinda got carried away..... M1028 rebuild

I haven't posted since January because I have been dealing with a few new health issues. I am now scheduled for major surgery on Wednesday June 9. I have a couple of vertebras in my neck which are pressing against my spinal cord. If not fixed, either of the vertebrae could sever the spinal...

    Power steering bracket

Frank, that’s only slightly more than $2 per minute. What’s wrong with that? Hail, if you’ve got the money and you want to keep your hands clean, it’s the only way to go.

    Replacement Fuel Tank

Well Marcus, I guess I am freaking nuts.

    Replacement Fuel Tank

Very well put Sir. I decided to install Spectre steel tanks and let some other boor pastard deal with it after I am dead and gone. I am 70 and with more health issues than I can count, so if the tanks will last just a few years while my truck is locked up in my heated and cooled warehouse, I...

Is it a transmission, transfercase, ujoint or rear diff problem?

Your leaky front transfer case seal may be more than the seal. You could have a scarred yoke shoulder to go along with a bad seal. I did a write-up on this a while back - https://www.steelsoldiers.com/threads/leaky-front-transfer-case-seal-maybe-not.195119/

    Replacement Fuel Tank

Rick - the used tank I got from you was a little too rusty for my taste. You know how I am. But I am bead blasting and painting your brackets which I needed anyway. My original drivers side tank is not in too bad shape, but since I had my bed off I decided to swap it out too. I will probably...

    Replacement Fuel Tank

OK after re-thinking the situation, I have decided to install the new Spectre tanks without painting them. They are galvanized inside and out, and they will certainly last my lifetime.

    Replacement Fuel Tank

Thanks Rick. I believe I will paint the tanks with the same Rustoleum semi-gloss black. Regarding the attachment of the new straps to the brackets, I will rivet them the same way as they came from the factory. I am planning a big write-up on the tank install and bed modifications over in my...

    Replacement Fuel Tank

OK I think I am ready to move forward with installing the new fuel tanks. I am bead blasting the frame brackets and will rivet the new straps to them after they are painted. I always drench all steel parts with Fast Etch from Eastwood’s as soon as they are blasted. This is a phosphoric acid...

    Opinions on Undercoating

Thanks Hupp for your reply. I’ve pretty much decided on the undercoating product I’m going to use, however I am still up in the air regarding an interior insulation product. You say 3M Peel &Stick? Where would an old fart like me learn about that product?

    Opinions on Undercoating

Marcus I looked up that Fluid Film. Wow that is some wild stuff. I believe if I was going to be getting my truck wet and nasty every weekend like some half-cocked teenager, I would probably buy and use that product. I will have to agree with you, Fluid Film is probably the best product for...

    Opinions on Undercoating

Thanks Marcus but there is no moisture or rust on my truck. It hasn't seen rain since 2010. The cab bottom is in almost new condition. I am looking for a rubberized coating such as is suggested by a later post.

    Opinions on Undercoating

OK I know this may be a volatile subject, so before I get flamed please consider my specific situation - My M1028 sat on a National Guard Base in Arizona for 25 years before I got it. It had, and still has, Zero rust on the underside. In fact, the underside of the cab looks almost new. I...

    Question about Rebuilt(?) TH-400

Ditto what Rick said. Find a shop with plenty of real human being references you can speak with. If a shop doesn't or will not have references, keep on moving. Pay the money and have peace of mind. If you don't have the cash, sell something and get it. Nothing is more scary than to be miles...
