Need Some Help with Rear Axle Seal "blow out"

Well... guess I'll find out how much is still "within range". After torquing to 50ft lbs, I backed the axle nuts off almost half a turn. Everything still felt good, no movement etc. I drove the truck today about 60 to 70 miles, felt of the hubs right after returning home and they were all cool...

Need Some Help with Rear Axle Seal "blow out"

I got both sides all back together the other day. And yeah, I saw that wheel cylinder pin the when I posted that photo. I fixed it since. Just got the differential cover gasket all cleaned off, and reinstalled the cover with the new gasket earlier today. Unless something comes up, I should get...

Need Some Help with Rear Axle Seal "blow out"

I already know the front wheel bearings have some wear. If you jack up the truck you can feel a little bit of slop in the wheel.

Need Some Help with Rear Axle Seal "blow out"

Should finish up the rear axles tomorrow or monday. So... I'm now looking up parts to go through the front axle. From what I am seeing in the TMs, the front and rear wheel bearings are the same?? Outer Bearings / Race: LM104949 / LM104911 Inner Bearings / Race: 387AS / 382A Looking at...

Need Some Help with Rear Axle Seal "blow out"

Need input. I slowly tightened up the axle nut while spinning the hub. Below is where the locknut ended up at 50lbs. TM states to loosen enough to install key. Should I only back it to install it in the nearest slot, which is the one thats its already half aligned with. Or back i off to the next...

Need Some Help with Rear Axle Seal "blow out"

Here is an update to my progress.... I'm slow but I'll get it done eventually. Yesterday I made a new pin for the parking brake lever. Used a 3/8" Grade 5 bolt, not the threaded part but the smooth shaft portion. I cut the head off, then clamped my dremel tool off the side of my workbench...

Need Some Help with Rear Axle Seal "blow out"

Yeah the axle nut on this truck has round holes too. This socket had square pins, and the were spaced correctly. But would not fit into the nut. I could have took a dremel and ground the corners off of each pin, and it would have probably worked. If this other socket doesn't fit, thats what I'll...

Need Some Help with Rear Axle Seal "blow out"

well, did a final cleaning on the drums and got the new bearings and seals installed. Started working on how to make a pin for the parking brake lever. never heard back from hillbilly wizard, so making a pin is my only option at this point. Just went to the mailbox and got the socket I had...

Need Some Help with Rear Axle Seal "blow out"

Question: What is the consensus on installing the rear wheel bearings? To fill with grease before install? Or leave Dry? TM states to grease front wheel bearings. But doesn't say anything concerning the rear wheel bearings. I have read that some people say to grease them, but other people say...

Need Some Help with Rear Axle Seal "blow out"

Thought I would post an update. Since the driver side drum was smooth, somehow even after all those parts and springs were floating around in there. I thought I wouldn't have to get the drums turned, even though I would rather do so anytime replacing shoes. However when I removed the passengers...

Need Some Help with Rear Axle Seal "blow out"

I saw that pin in some of the photos I looked up by part #. I figured it must have been for alignment with the other pieces. Thanks for the detailed explanation, I'll be sure to assemble it that way once I get to the front end.

Need Some Help with Rear Axle Seal "blow out"

Well, looking at the TM and looking up the part numbers, the front shows 4 pin/slot nuts. I don't see how a 6 pin socket would fit. But I'll wait until I get the front apart and see, have to order the parts for the front then anyway. Get the rear done first and go from there.

Need Some Help with Rear Axle Seal "blow out"

Still looking for the parking brake lever, hopefully will hear back from Hillbilly Wizard. In the mean times I need to get the spindle nut socket for the rear. I would just take it to a parts store and get a "loaner", but the closest auto parts store that has loaner tools like this is about 40...

Need Some Help with Rear Axle Seal "blow out"

Well, not really any salvage yards out in this area. I may have to make something. I'll see what I can come up with first though. EDIT: I sent an email to Hillbilly Wizard, see if he has anything.

Need Some Help with Rear Axle Seal "blow out"

Hey guys, I was going to make a post with some updates on the passengers side. BUT I have run into a problem. All the small parts and pieces from the drivers side brake, some of which were just floating around in the drum. I had put them into a can with cleaner to break down all the gear oil...

Need Some Help with Rear Axle Seal "blow out"

Haven't got to the front yet, but I do believe I remember the last time i had the master open the rubber seal was harder to go back in than it should have been. That may be why. Just looking at parts on Rockauto, to rebuilt the front calipers with all new rubber seals & boots, brake hardware...
