Get a 12 space panel from home depot and use it to build a breakout panel. **Bond the neutral (L0) to ground** Since it is a separately derived system when you set your grounding (rods) you need to tie L0 to ground to establish your neutral to 0 potential. At your breakout (panel) the neutral...
I repainted my 004. I knocked down the rust spots primed and painted both with spray paint. If your wiring is in good shape, id leave it alone

Not to my knowledge. That wire hanging from the box below the exhaust pipe, it looks like that may be the temperature sensor leads. If so that may be your problem

If you are sure that the oil and temp switches are good, I would meter TB5-7 with the switch in run (since you are getting fuel pump I suspect this is good, then TB5-8 to battery negative, This should go to 24 volt as soon as you start cranking.
K1 (start relay) is energized from the start position of the start switch, (its also parallel to K5 (gov solenoid) when K1 closes it holds itself in as long as the set is in run and oil is ok and temp is ok. if high heat or low oil K1 drops out. If the K1 contact isnt passing current and...
Putting one backwards would not make it parallel, From an electrical theroy standpoint it would yeald 0 volts (12+ plus 12- =0) in practice usually a fire.
when is it shutting off? right as you release the start switch? the oil pressure and temp switch will shut it down, and loss of K1
yes it can run on 1 pump
these gauges can lie to you, verify frequency with a meter
1 pump is an aux fuel pump, it pulls from an external source to fill the tank. the other 2 pull from the tank and feed the injection pump, they are redundant (meaning you only need 1 to run) Be aware that not all pumps are alike, some can not be run in series because they will not flow...
Backfeed in the sense that the breaker is passing current into the buss.
Backfeed as in making an outlet an inlet is 1 dangerous and 2 a jackass move.

Backfeeds can be done legally with an interlock (these are used on a panel with a main breaker, its typically a bolt on breaker slide) and feed breakers need to be either bolt in or have an additional means of anchor to the buss.
