    Engine Locked? | 855 Cummins

You are correct. Jumping to conclusions has bitten me in the past, so it may be wise to do a little sit-rep before tearing into things. All I have done thus far, is remove the rocker covers, loosen the injector adjustment screws (and recently reset them back to proper torques), and bar the...

    Engine Locked? | 855 Cummins

A starting system problem wouldn't cause it to stop (and so suddenly) after it was running. However, after about an hour of troubleshooting, I tried to turn it over with the starter again, only to find the battery was low (needle buried in red on voltmeter). So I can't really rule it out I...

    Engine Locked? | 855 Cummins

I will look at the TMs for info on how to pull the injectors, per Wills advice. Do I need a special tool? The 34 TM suggests I do. No liquids from exhaust piping that I can see. No unusual noises, it started, ran for a few seconds, then suddenly stopped. No bang. If it is fluid, what are the...

    Engine Locked? | 855 Cummins

That is unfortunate, but I suppose new headgaskets wouldn't hurt anyway, as it does leak oil slightly. I am going to wait to pull the heads just yet, but I will order gaskets. Doing "major" engine work is not easy in my case, as it must be done outdoors without the assistance of any lifts or...

    Engine Locked? | 855 Cummins

Thanks doghead. Is it possible to identify a stuck valve without pulling the heads or valvesprings? I barred the engine over while watching the valvesprings and didn't see anything unusual. Additionally, I loosened up all injector adjustment screws. There is still no change in engine rotation...

    Engine Locked? | 855 Cummins

Engine Locked Up? | 855 Cummins Greetings! Sad times hath befallen. Today I went to start my M814 with the NHC 250 Cummins. It turned over, and began to start. It spat a good deal of white smoke, but not anything to out of the ordinary for this truck. I felt the engine was running, and...

To Purge or Not to Purge | 855 Cummins

I should mention also, when getting ready to set the overhead, I attempted to stop the engine using the emergency stop lever. However when pulled, it did nothing. The engine continued to run, unaffected. Same result if I actuated the lever directly on the pump outlet. I am not sure if perhaps it...

To Purge or Not to Purge | 855 Cummins

Sorry for the delay, been really busy at work. Finished the the overhead adjustments, and went for a test drive the other day. On first startup, it was like a volcanic eruption. Enormous grey black smoke cloud, and soot and ash, even a small amount of black liquid. It cleared though and the...

    Nhc250 valve injector overhead adjusting

Forgive me Will, but how does one apply an accurate torque using a screwdriver? (Assuming injector adjustment).

To Purge or Not to Purge | 855 Cummins

Good news friends! I have retrieved the fallen tool. It was not as difficult as I first thought. For anyone else who makes the same mistake, here is what I did. I drained the oil. I have a 3" x .5" neodymium magnet puck. It is very powerful, and if handled incorrectly could probably break your...

To Purge or Not to Purge | 855 Cummins

Update: I removed the rocker covers, and began the procedure to adjust overhead. I am going off the advice here: http://www.steelsoldiers.com/showthread.php?73256-Nhc250-valve-injector-overhead-adjusting Post #8. I hadn't even finished my first injector, on cylinder 1, when my flathead bit came...

To Purge or Not to Purge | 855 Cummins

A quick update my friends! I have been running the Fleetguard Injector Cleaner for a little over a week. Although I only get time to drive my truck an hour or two every other day or so, it seems to have made some difference. I can't say I have any more power, and she still smokes just as...

    Cooked #1 Piston

Just watched your video last night. Thank you for posting your misfortunes, it may help others. It is stuff like this though that makes me fear for my engine. Good luck on the rebuild!

To Purge or Not to Purge | 855 Cummins

Thank you all for the replies and wisdom! I don't think my truck is missing. It idles rough, and shakes quite a bit, but smooths out as the RPMs increase above about 800. Idle also hunts for a short time when throttle is released. I'm planning on doing the overhead when I get some OK weather...

To Purge or Not to Purge | 855 Cummins

Greetings gentlemen! My new to me M814 seems to be low on power. This is my first MV, so maybe they really are this sluggish. I cannot quantify it well in words, but 0-55mph (at full power, unloaded, on stock 11.00x20 tires and on level ground) takes well over a minute. It drives like it is...

    Eventful 5 Ton Recovery

Fortunately, I was hit directly from behind, so no side load on the axles. Additionally, I have an M814, which is the "extra-long" wheelbase. The car never touched the rear suspension. I appreciate your feedback, I will still do a visual check on the torque rods for any cracks or damage. Thanks!

    Eventful 5 Ton Recovery

Sorry for the long delay. Thank you all for your concerns and good wishes! My truck seems mechanically undamaged. Only scratched paint and scuffed spare tire. (Sorry about the crappy night pictures, I don't get home usually until after dark) Oh, here is the truck in its entirety: As far...
