I assume he was making a comment about lift laws since they are normally based on bumper height. If that's the case, explain that it's not a light duty truck and the lift laws don't normally apply to them. You may want to double check that with your local laws to be sure. If it's someone who...
RE: TM
Which model HMMWV? The manuals are working for me, but if not, I have the manual saved and can post the pics of the pattern.
EDIT: Here's the pattern for the slantback models:
I believe they are off the Stryker armored combat vehicle. They no longer appear on the Michelin Tire site, so they may be available to the military only or have been replaced by the XZL.
RE: tow
I will say from my experience with the NP203 fulltime transfer case in the mid to late 70's Mopars that towing it without removing the driveshafts would be a bad idea especially for a truck with mileage on it. Just my .02
Hmm, lighter short wheelbase vehicle in the front with a 1/2 ton rating towing a heavier, long wheelbase vehicle with a 1 ton rating. Couple that with the fact that you are exceeding the weight limits of the towing vehicle and the fact that the towed vehicle will not have any brakes on it and I...
RE: Welding Frames
No hard feelings at all, I just think it's important on a public forum that can have many, many readers of wildly differing skill levels that we put out the whole story and the recommended course of action. I have welded things that I know shouldn't have been welded, but I...
You could always donate it to the soon to be founded "Elwenil's House of Military Coolness". It could be my first exhibit! It's real easy, you just bring it to me and I'll take it from there, lol.
Seriously, it's a nice truck. I'd post the usual classified ad with all the details here at SS...
Measure the compressed length, the extended length, and the mounting method and size and check with a local auto parts store. Most likely a shock out there for a civilian truck application will work fine with a little OD paint. Just don't get something for a light car or it will be valved...
I do not doubt the welding abilities of some of the members here at SteelSoldiers, however the TM clearly state that the frames are not repairable and if found to be out of line, the truck is unserviceable:
Also note that all the frame brackets and related hardware are all riveted or bolted in...
RE: Re: RE: logo
I always thought that the Russian Government bought stuff from us also. Like the Dodge trucks chassis for the Katiusha rocket launcher. I'm no WWII buff, but I think I remember that correctly.
On the welding bit, I would not weld on a truck frame. They are made different than light duty car and pickup frames. They are heat tempered and heating them will cause them to lose strength and fail. Same with drilling the flanges, it causes a stress point and will eventually fail. If you...
I have seen many pics of the various Michelin directional tread tires with them mounted all sorts of ways. I also remember seeing a bulletin out from the military about mounting them and if I remember right, it said that it really didn't make any difference which direction to mount them. If it...
RE: Re: RE: logo
I wonder if the restriction wasn't lifted earlier and none of the manufacturers took advantage of it? The M715 had the "JEEP" lettering on the tailgate and I think the early M880 models had "DODGE" stamped in the tailgate, if I remember correctly. Or maybe these just slipped...
RE: logo
I wonder if it was a restriction, or just that it's normally cheaper for the manufacturer to omit the badges and thus have a cheaper contract bid.
