Start by just removing the solenoid, disassembling it and checking for corroded or worn parts. Sometimes you can turn the big bolt from the starter around and use an unworn part of the head.

Oh, yes. Even with a respirator that seals correctly around my face, I STILL got grit in my mouth. Not to mention my ears, the crack of my butt and my belly button. But seriously, you will need a fairly large compressor with a hefty high pressure CFM rating to blast large areas.

You would need a pretty large air compressor to blast away the sand so it wouldn't take a month. Also, when you use a sanblaster, you WILL get the blast media in parts of your body that you had forgotten you have.
