You're by no means the first person to get screwed by Wolverine. That seems to happen pretty frequently.
Im not sure about a kit, but my truck has a standard internally regulated 24 volt Delco installed with a couple simple homemade brackets. While I bought the truck this way, Ive done the...
Not worse, but they have their peculiarities. Ambac did their own thing with these pumps and they didnt get used on much other than Multi's, so the knowledge is very specific. If you're at all familiar with the more complex rotary pumps like the Bosch VE, you'll have a bit of a head start.
Depending on how long its been since it last ran, you might want to ensure the fuel control moves correctly. Like an old jimmy, they can stick at wot if left sitting long enough. Theres pictures/ descriptions to be found on this site of exactly where to look.
The rear wheels are held on with Budd style lugs, so you will need the correct style of sockets to remove them (or at least the inner 'thimble' nut. They can be a bit of a pain, and dont forget that if all is correct, the passenger side is reverse thread.
Deep inside the metal under the passenger door opening I recovered a spent blank 223 (IIRC) cartridge with non civilian headstamps. I suppose its been in there since some training exercise in a bygone time. Considering how long my truck was in use as a firetruck and other things, I'm amazed...
Glad you got it going! These pumps definitely have their oddities!
I must say, your ordeal just goes to prove what ive said for years... Fixing old stuff is 50% undoing nature and time, 50% undoing the previous owner.
The deuce fuel system is pretty much self bleeding. Even a substantial air leak wont keep one from trying to run, and nothing but an open and drained line will stop it from flowing at least something. You are not getting any flow through the last stage of the pump, either due to the most...
Theres a guy on youtube with one on a 6.5 GM, and from the sound of it, even that barely spools it up. I do wish there were some other loud turbo options... I would love that scream on my 24v Cummins.
Sorry if you've answered any of this before but... have you confirmed fuel is 100% getting to the injection pump inlet in good quantity? Do you get any fuel even drooling out of the delivery valve hole if you crank it with the dv removed? when you changed the HH, has it been full of fuel?
If...
Have you confirmed that the plunger is actually moving / that the entire pump is actually spinning? Weve been through most of the normal and less normal stuff it seems, perhaps the pump cam is worn out, or the pump seized and broke its shaft? The plunger can be accessed through the center cap...
Head gaskets (two, one for each set of three cylinders), thermostat to intake gasket (one), water manifold gaskets (six), turbo drain gasket (one), intake/ exhaust manifold gasket (two, one for each set of 3 cylinders). Im pretty certain that's all you need, unless I'm forgetting something...
You pretty much summed it up: buy whatever you think is best and run it. I also agree that modern fluids are way better than anything from when these rigs were new.
I personally noticed a major decrease in shift quality after changing the trans fluid and running ND30. It was fine in the cold...
That is the crankcase breather. If you follow it, it runs up to the top of the engine and straddles the two valve covers.
I hate to say it, but that looks like quite a lot of vapor coming out. Inspect all you fluids right away and try to determine what is coming out. If its water vapor (steam)...
In my opinion, it seems to vary in importance truck-by-truck. Some seem to 'need' it to even start, others go long periods not even knowing its gone. My supposition is that it has to do with how airtight the low pressure system is, and how healthy the booster pump is. Will pulling fuel through...
Did you buy it with this issue, or did it crop up after you've been running it for a while?
I can attest that, when correct, these fuel systems are self bleeding. Even when I had pulled and drained all six injectors, it only took a few rotations to purge them and start right up. If your lift...
It would appear you have an "algae bloom", which is a microbial growth that thrives in Diesel fuel. Unfortunately, a cleaning of the tank and load of fresh treated fuel is the only way to really clear it up. Dumping in a heavy 'shock' treatment of Biocide will kill many of the 'bugs' but may not...
Thanks, all! I was mostly planning on doing it 'wet', and so I shall. I like the idea of the preheated coolant (especially since there is way to much in the way of those xxxx studs.)
The last head gasket I did was on a straight 8 Packard. I did a retourque on that and they moved a LOT, and that...
Hopefully dropping the heads back on my 1D/ TD in the next few days...
Is there a consensus on doing a re-torque with the new style gaskets?
Is this a "wet" or "dry" torque?
Thanks guys!
I have a full JAtonka spin on conversion set on my truck and the cold start oil pressure rise is comparable to any standard heavy duty engine. Definitely an upgrade I recommend.
interestingly (at least to me) we have a number of big gen sets at work, and none have prelube systems... 3508...
