yes definately remove the top cover in the truck!! it makes it far easier. common failures are
1: front bearing, trans must come apart but is easy. use the correct bearing, there are several that will fit but only one correct.
2: front bearing retainer, worn, loose, no gasket, someone used...

there are several things it can be, even some the manual does not cover. basically it means it can generate but the voltage reg is not working. the field is flashed when in start and the output of the gen powers the regulator. remove one of the field wires from the reg and the manual tells you...
if it has not been used in years the fuel is likely sticking things up. use lacquer thinner. do NOT ever use air pressure you will destroy the regulator.
