:ditto: I did the exact thing on my truck. I had the bumpers off to sandblast them and repaint. I went ahead an put on all new ones because they were cheap and I didn't want to mess with rusty ones later.

Congrats David! Keep us posted on your progress. It looks like a cool truck and that great big gasser should be a smooth running powerplant. Quiet at idle too.
NHC250 is 250hp/ 685 lb-ft@1500rpm, 8.3 is 240hp/ 745 lb-ft@1500rpm . 923A2 weighs 1200lb less than a 923A1. I've heard better reviews about the 8.3 trucks as far as acceleration, but don't have any first-hand experience. 60 lb-ft should make a nice difference though. Op manual lists the...
Hey Bill,
Long time no see :D I forgot that you had a couple of 900's in your stable. So, a C-16 CAT eh? That should be fun. You still running duals or did you switch to A1/A2 singles?
Hey Bruce,
My Op manual says 36,910lbs empty weight for your 936A2!! Holy cow that's a lot of truck. If...
Thanks David, I am looking forward to working on it and getting it roadworthy. I need to force myself to take my time with it so I don't miss something and break expensive parts.
Good story OPCOM!
Chad, you'll get to find out how it handles firsthand on the way to Aberdeen! We'll get you behind the wheel for a while :D You could definitely put a Jeep or something in the bed, but it would take some serious ramps! ;)
Here's what you could do. I did something like this because my right rear corner was higher than the left. Not three inches higher though.
Find a level spot. Get 4 jack stands. Jack the whole truck off the ground and put the stands under the frame just in front of the rear spring mount and...
Nice score David! It looks very fresh so hopefully it won't give you any trouble. I rebuilt and sold 3 MEP-016C sets back in 2001. They were a little different animal than yours, but most of the military standard engines are tough and well-built.
So, what exactly is powered in the latrine...
CanonNinja, no comment. I have seen A2 trucks listed for $15-30k depending on which variant and condition. Mine was less than that, but I'm sure I'll have a good deal in it by the time it's perfect.
Bruce, thanks for the offer. I'll email my parts wanted list to you as soon as I get a chance...
CanonNinja,
An 813 would be a easier to find at this point and less expensive. I'm sure there will be quite a few of them coming up at auction over the next year. Many of the surplus dealers have the 800's on hand as well.
The 900's are harder to come by, especially the A2's since they are...
Cool truck Mike. It's amazing how these trucks follow us home all the time :D What kind of goodies were left in the box besides the genset/welder unit?
Nice pic. I can hear it now. "Man, I can't figure out how my Unimogs from Germany got all smashed up inside their container! It's almost like a 100' tower of containers toppled over on them."
True, but I would really like an extended cab or crew cab. Maybe I could find an Air Force 3+3 with a 6.2? If not, a 7.3L IDI Ford crew cab would work.
Heck, I'll just drive the 923A2 every day!
I thought you were bringing the GOER this year AMG! :D
I figure I'll meet up with y'all at Doswell in time for dinner or maybe catch the convoy at Petersburg or something. All of it really depends on how much time and money I'll have to spend on the 923 between now and then!
For testing glow plugs, I just used a little jumper wire from the positive batt post to the terminal on the plug. Then you just touch the lug to ground and check for glow. No need to cycle the system on and off that way. You can also use a multimeter to check them in the block. Set it to...
PS, I had oil spewing out the shift tower of my deuce on the drive homoe from buying it. Turns out water had run down the shift lever where it sat outside without a top for who knows how long. The tranny got hot on the highway, the water boiled and forced oil out around the seal. Might not be...
