Bill, Hope you had a good thanksgiving. Your compression readings are too low for the diesel to ignite. Hence the starter fluid kick to get it going. I will also bet that if you loaded the unit fully, you would find it would stall out (due to it not having the proper compression). If you want...

Mep 002 looking for a genset, generator ideas?

I have struggled with a big box store gas 3600 rpm unit for years with non-existent voltage control (all over the place). After buying a 002a for $870, I bought two more on GL for around $800 each. Have had to put some cash into each one to get them running. Average around $400 each (ip fuel...

    Choctaw H140 heater cycles a lot.....normal?

I attended the Army 52C Utilities training in the early 80's and worked on the predecessor to yours. So, I don't know for sure on yours, but in my experience the flame cycling does not sound normal. Have you verified that the burner control is cycling the flame or a safety? If operating on...

Straight from the TM (34) under poor compression: Normal cylinder pressure is between 350 and 450 psi depending upon engine condition. Maintenance should be considered if pressure is below 325 psi or if there is a 15 percent or more difference between cylinders. Check for loose cylinder...

Something is bothering me-OP reported 200 lb reading on all cylinders. There has to be a common problem. If one cylinder has issues with compression, the others would normally read higher if in good condition. Is this a general wearing of the rings and cylinder wall? What would cause it to...

I had one this past summer that was doing the same thing that Zeusdiesel's was doing (starting and then wouldn't start). Turns out I had low compression and one cracked piston and one broken piston. Damage may have been somewhat self-inflicted with starting fluid. Although, there was a...

TM says 350-450 is acceptable for healthy engine compression. David

    another 003 done....finally

Jim, Excellent work! I get more jealous every time I see your creations. Don't think it would work for me though-I would have to wax it each time it was run... :-) David

    Mep-003

For those of you that are considering interlock kits, I have installed them on several jobs (and have passed code inspection in VA at least), but they are pricey for what they are. Found another source for about half of the cost that uses a plexiglass material for the lock. Going to install...

Bill, You might check with your local hvac contractors to see if they will let you have a discarded heat pump air handler section with the fan and heating elements. I have one set up in the shop with four 5kw manually switchable heaters for load testing. Makes a neat package. David

Hasn't been mentioned yet, but the compression gauge needs to be close as possible to the adapter to prevent errors in reading. HF setups have a schrader (like tire valve), fitting in the connection hose. I went the injector port route-had a machine shop make up an adapter to take the place of...

Bill, Reading your posts, the symptoms do sound like low compression. A compression test will show up that if so. You mentioned you had it running with the house load (iirc). Do you have any way to measure full load amps/wattage to see what it is putting out under load (amprobe). Do you have...

Bill, Some of your postings sound like the issues I had with my 002. I went the ether route when my unit would start and then not start. Believe I damaged both pistons with the ether (had to replace them). I thought I had a compression issue when thinking back the ip fuel shutoff might have...

mep-003a running temp in a closed environment

"BTW an open box of mothballs will keep all pests out." What is the secret to keeping mice out of wiring? I tried a box of mothballs in the boat cabinets and the mice chewed the box and incorporated the cardboard and a few mothballs into the nest. One of my 02a's is going to be installed under...

Need help 003a in previously perfect condition stopped producing power.

Jerry, may just have been a coincidence that something died the same time. You tried a 12v battery on the exciter. How about taking an ohm reading on the exciter wires through the gen head. You worked with the wiring, there may be a loose connection that comes and goes. I can't imagine your...
