I just purchased a '53 M38A1 - and I knew it was converted to 12 volt. I am in the process of just getting it street legal now, but later I will completely restore the 24 v. system. In the meanwhile, I can't find a power distribution panel. I have looked on the schematics and don't see one so...
What is the plug that the arrow is pointing to? There are two of them on the driver's side and the lower one is leaking coolant. If I can identify it then I can figure out how to fix it. I looked in the TMs but couldn't find it.
Good Mechanic
I know a great diesel mechanic that used to work on M1009s / M1008s when he was in the Army if you need one. He is just outside of Loganville. PM me for phone number.
Snapping bolts fix
I had the snapping bolts problem as well. I FINALLY bought a $ 2.35 bracket from the local GM dealer and installed it. 12 months later, as a daily driver, and no problems.
That $ 2.35 bracket could have saved me literally thousands of dollars had I installed it day one on...
Military Units with Winches
There were M1008s and M1009s at the Smyrna,TN National Guard base with winches installed. They must have been after market installs.
Someone took some pictures and they are in this post...
I have noticed that many M1009s have a patch of rust on the lower, center portion of the tail gate. I had a rust patch and had it fixed when mine was repainted about 15 months ago. I also replaced the rubber on the rear window. The rust has returned. Either I'm still getting some kind of water...
I can't find the procedures for REAR wheel bearing servicing and replacement for the m1009 in the TMs. I searched the threads and found a very helpful post:

I am using that as my outline for the bearing...
Middle of the Road Cost
My experience has been middle of the road cost wise.
I got a pretty good deal on my M1009 but I had the fever and paid a little too much. D'OH!
My major malfunction that cost me so much money was the starter. I sheared off a bolt while out of town, had it fixed...
I took one more look at the -20 schematic and traced everything back to that fuse...which was missing! I had put it in the wrong slot during a previous check. That's why everyone always says start at the beginning with the TM and work the problem that way.
Starter Bracket
I had no end of trouble breaking starter bolts, bolts falling out and other starter issues. After literally hundreds of dollars, I got smart and put the $ 3.00 starter bracket on and I have had no bolt problems since then. I also torqued my bolts to specifications and haven't...
Solved!
Went back to the schematic one last time before bed. Had a eurika moment...ran outside and looked...I had removed a 20 amp fuse from the panel and misplaced it...so it was all just a fuse!
Now I have a clean driver console, though.
I have seen it written here that in...
Update
Still trouble shooting. Have the dash completely off and can find no break in the wiring. I know it is there...
Any body got any ideas what circuit the WTS, GEN 2, Water in Fuel could all be on?
I just had a no start problem that was resolved with the doghead relay install. It was pretty cool to trouble shoot through the problem with everyone's input and the TMs. I feel like I accomplished something. Apparently my M1009 wants me to keep working because now I have another basket of...
Repaired...sort of
It was the sarter relay. I did the doghead modification and voila...
But now my H20, WTS and Volt meter aren't working...
And my turn signals start without the key in the ignition....
At least it starts!
