If I post any videos to youtube, I'll put links here. My wife got some pretty good footage of me going through town past the bars and down the interstate, etc.
Truck/trailer worked great. I scaled at 65k so the trailer/load came out to about 45k towed on the pintle (I have a lightweight wooden bed on my M820 chassis). It's about a 20k tongue weight so you obviously know it's back there. 250 ran great with a little boost and rail pressure bump. I...
I can't remember how fast my M809 would go in low 5th at 2100 rpm. I feel like.... 30?
She spins s a little faster now and has 395's but if could find the stock numbers (which I did once :( ) I could calculate it from there.
Thanks guys.
Nothing against an 8.3, but this kind of work (and that heavy a crankshaft/flywheel) is exactly why I wanted a full size, long haul "big rig" 855. This is the first time I actually worked it in the neighborhood of it's designed load. It seemed to love it. Puffed just a touch of black smoke...
They sure do. I tried to be gentle once the boat was attached to the trailer but if I was heavy handed it would just rear up and snatch that 25 tons up the ramp like it almost wasn't there.
Started loading my landing craft onto that trailer I built. First step is to drag that boat/trailer combo as far as I can up the ramp to keep my "in water" work to a minimum during the final stages of loading and securing. Boat ramp is not designed for 65' trailers so my tandem was 20 ft...
I could see a man of your skill set lenthening that filter housing and putting in a longer element. Or something along those lines... I temporarily have a big K&N on my turbo but long term, I'll probably end up running two housings tee'd together. I'll enjoy watching what you come up with.
I believe that’s 3” tubing from the compressor to the intake manifold (I was wrong, it’s 3.5”). Pyro’s can be installed before or after exhaust turbine. They read about 200 degrees cooler when they are installed after. They also don’t react quite as quickly so I believe preturbo is the better...
If you'd like even more info on the 855's there's a fbook group I found called Cummins 855 enthusiasts. It's exactly that. The 855 was a dominant long haul engine for 50+ years and this group reflects that. Lots of old truckers who've been running 250's, 290's, 350's, etc. turning them up and...
He’s going to answer better than me, but he’s also likely to mention piston coolers, lower compression pistons, and retarded cam timing (to allow for “fuller” injectors that start squirting sooner).
Did the turbo this week. Had everything collected (elbows, hoses, etc) so it was a 24 hr quick and dirty install. Runs and sounds great. It’s a lot of fun.
Here’s a few pics. I did this in a field with an acetylene torch and a generator so it’s not my finest work, but it was a quick way to go from zero to turbo.
I do. I have a pyro and a rail pressure gauge since I turned the pump up. I keep it under 200 psi and I was able to get it above 1000 degrees before I installed the turbo. I don't like that.
With the turbo it does pull better from 16-1700 after I shift into 4th and I'm not able to get it...
Thank you so much. I started installing the turbo today (mocking up the manifold and tubing and tacking things together) so I was really hoping someone could help me. Your timing couldn’t have been better. I appreciate that👍
Couldn’t agree more. Admittedly I made it worse by adding taller tires to get better road speed. I’ve been doing the lo 2-5, hi 4-5 for a little while. Getting better at it but it’s never a guarantee I’ll hit the shift on the transfer!
