Yep, the 6ct is a screamer. I did the first real road test on it last weekend, and being extraordinarily schedule constrained this week, I've been itching to drive it since!
Oh yeah, and I too love everything about a 5 ton except the long nose and fenders, which is why I used an m35 cab (it was also handy).
Btw, I have no pretensions that this is either a 5 ton or a deuce. I like specific things about both platforms, and I decided to mix and match what I liked from...
Yep, my truck is far from finished, and I sorely need a good solution for the front grille - I decided to hang that intercooler out farther, rather than cut farther into the firewall and doghouse more of the back of the 6ct.
I'm happy to answer any questions about adapting a 6ct into a truck...
Yep, it's M35 sheetmetal. I have more in common with the 5 ton crew so I think this fits better here.
And, interesting that the 6CT is spec'd to pull 45 tons!!!! My truck is all of 7 tons, so I'm very very fast. :)
I flipped both 5 ton axles to accomodate the outputs on the transfer case. I...
One quick pic from the drive. Not sure if I have others handy right now.
Bodywork is still on the to-do, as things like lights, brakes and steering have taken precedence. :)
It's an amalgam, for sure, but the truck is a screamer with that engine, the tranny, the brakes, and the steering (poor...
I am between tasks right now, and I figured I'd jump over here and give a brief report on the first real road report of my repower project.
I drove the truck from Boulder down to Golden and up and over Lookout Mountain on Sunday morning, covering maybe 50 miles in total. The trip consisted of...
It has come to my realization that discussing this project, or discussing my work on this forum, is probably not what I should be doing with my time. While I have what I would say is experienced disagreement with many elements of this thread, I can see that this is more conversational than...
I concur that the M35 suspension design has its merits. However, if you were building a truck today, as one example of many, no way would you build a 0* caster kingpin angle on a steering axle on leafs, without a panhard. The rear axle system is functional but even that is sloppy. Even when I...
So, upshot is that the old design of these trucks, featuring the R6602, dictated an axle positioning that stuck around even when newer power plants were employed?
Apologies - I skimmed the first post, and totally mis-read the intent. I saw "hand vices" and was off to the races on how to join recalcitrant wheel halves.
The cummins 6cta-8.3 is a solid engine. It's the big brother to the venerable 6bt found in dodge trucks. My 6ct, from a civvy application, even has a p7100 pump, giving me many options with the IP for additional power.
When I assembled my old 53's on old Military combat rims, my preferred method of sucking them down into place was a highlift jack. Allow me to explain:
Because the dimensions didn't work out in any other way, I had to use a novel method. I sat the tire and main part of the rim under my truck...
I have one of those Memphis systems. They use 16.5" Arvin meritor q series brakes, paired with the correct drums (I have the part number of the drums, somewhere).
The issue is that the Memphis conversion was never offered for the front axle. I made one of work the setups work for the front...
I'm not looking to break any rules concerning discussion of current auctions, but it's evident from the description of this that it's not standard military technology.
