The reduced cab noise in the M923 Cargo Truck is really enjoyable. But what if it could be reduced further?
Has anyone tried piping the exhaust on out the back? It looks like it would be easy. There might even be room for a muffler tucked up under the bed near the back.
It looks to me like it...
Now for your viewing displeasure I have these really boring but technically informative photos showing how much lateral space we have to work with behind the cab of the M923 for a spare tire.
The photo with the tape measure is on the port side, and tells us we have about 10" from the side of...
A new and longer T bolt will need to be made to accommodate the larger diameter 1600-20 spare. I hope to convince one of my machinist friends to make one for me. I figure a 36" cut of 1/2" steel rod with 12" of thread cut on one end will be flexible enough to work first time.
It should be long...
I don't know why I think I need a spare tire, but since I have seven 1600-20s coming, I might as well see if it can be squeezed between the cab and bed. Carefully measured today, there is ~just 16" between cab and bet. I think it'll fit.
The first mess I had to fix was to actually get the T...
Thanks!
And... Not any more!!!
So there is another idea I have that I am going to try and work into this project. I have been wanting some amber convoy lights. Dunno why, just like them. Saturn surplus has some cool ones already on pedestals that could be adapted. Somehow. Any ideas on how to...
After taking my measurements I pulled the pedestal off of the truck, removed those really cool magnets, and made a mark where I am going to cut it. My wife was just delighted to see me drag another Army Truck Part into the kitchen. She is very patient.
The plan is to cut it right where the nice...
This next pic illustrates that the current pedestal height is right now at 109", just over 9' from the ground. When I am done adding 18" of height and installing the 1600 tires, it will be right at 11'0". That's pretty high. I am going to have to be real careful about the Starbucks drive through...
I bought a couple of very cool Stryker spotlights from usmctopgun [thanks Gunny!] bought a couple of different lights from him, he is great to deal with.
So now it is time to get them mounted. The M923s being surplussed out right now have a pedestal mount behind the cab that was for some secret...
That is such a beautiful machine. I am so glad a fellow collector got it and not a foreign government or dealer. Great that you got it so reasonable. I thought I did well on mine, but that is a real bargain on a standout truck.
Are those 1400 or 1600 tires? And what is your top speed with them...
Yep. I burnt up a $95 genny VR yesterday. I was real butt hurt about that. What really pisses me off is I bought a spare for that very contingency but left it at my cabin 200 miles away where I had the genny for a while. Cost more to drive down there than to... buy another one.
As the Head of Dog says, max EGT is debatable. I keep mine at or below 1100 as that is where the yellow line on my pyrometer is, so it is easy to keep an eye on it.
OK, I'll bite. Why is it important to interrupt the negative side rather than the positive?
Oh, and I have a bunch of 2/0 cable that I will sell cut lengths cheap. I can also crimp on ends for you, I have the right crimper to do it.
Speaking of crimping, I really like the Youtube video that...
ATF and Hydraulic Fluid have more energy [BTUs] per gallon than diesel. So the mileage should be slightly better. The converse is true, if you are running #1 diesel or kerosene, you will get a bit less mileage per gallon as less energy is stored in the lighter fuel.
I am ~hoping, that the...
So if I may summarize. And I may, since this is a monologue at this point.
1. I failed to install the jumper on the VR between T3 & T4. This is required if your input voltage is 120vac which mine was. Well 107vac, close enough. So for those of you conversant in the TwitterVerse, that was a...
This next photo graphically illustrates the Second Thing I Did Wrong. Besides getting out of bed today. If you refer to the photo directly above, you will notice on T24 AKA L2, there are two smaller wires in a red connector and another wire underneath in a blue connector. All three of those...
Notice that I have helpfully labeled the terminals in the photo for VR1 with the correct terminal numbers. The second row of numbers are the corresponding terminal labels for a Newage Stamford VR. Well except for the ones I labeled POT. No, not the Mary Jane kind of POT, but rather the...
Here is where things really start to go wrong. In the photo below of the installed VR, notice that there is no jumper across pins 3 & 4.
But that's not all that's missing....
