Luckily I've neveer had that problem with the big trucks, but have had chunks come off of them dang Uniroyal Laredo's that most of the 1009s have on them. I've had probably a dozen of them do that, and they weren't caps, they just don't like speeds over 60mph.

A buddy and I did th antenna conversion to the tuneable base, SWR came out excellent, wasn't perfect but then where it was mounted didn't leave for the best of ground planes anyway. We found the instructions online, think it was a civvy hummer website.
The CF&I steel mill in Pueblo, CO, used to be one of the foundrys that made Sherman turrets. Rumor has it that there are a coupl turrets buried there that were "blems". Just a rumor I heard, couldn't prove it if I had to.
