Great. I put 5 tons of road mix in mine, chained up all 3 axels, waited for hard frozen conditions and now have plowed 3 times. Not really enough snow for this rig, but a lot of fun.
When I was stationed in Germany, a source for hardware, although expensive, was the Caterpillar dealer. We were near Nuremburg and there was a big Cat dealership there.
Not that it matters, But I was the Support Operations officer in the 501 BSB when the reorganization of 1st Armored Division went to the Forward Support Battalion/Main Support Battalion configuration in 1986. 501 Supply and Transportation Battalion converted to 2nd Support Battalion, then to 501...
Depending on tires, you might want chains on the front for braking and steering. My experience with tires is almost all with the old military 9.00 and 11.00 tires and they don't stop or steer well on hardpack snow and ice. 10 + years in tactical units in the 70's and 80's in Europe and now my...
A 12 volt automotive wet cell battery is fully charged at 12.5-12.6 volts. 12.2 volts is less than 25% charged. A battery showing 12.5 volts should not drop below 9.6 volts after a load of 50% of the cold cranking amps (CCA) applied at 70 degrees F. for 15 seconds. This load test is probably the...
I have an 817 and have owned the truck a year with no problems. I had hauled for a couple of days and stopped to fuel up. Could not restart. No click, no electrical response. I did all the troubleshooting including getting a $100 service call 28 volt jump. Had to pull start it. Battery test...
Amick,
Yes there are others in Montana. A long way from population centers and parts sources. Here are some pictures of the money pit I got in 2011. The excuse to buy the M 817 was to plow snow. It took about a year to mate the Washau plow to the truck and we've yet to have enough snow to really...
What truck are you working on? My 817 has a pull handle that is the emergency fuel shut off. Pull it and it shuts off fuel to the IP. You must reset it manually at the injector pump before you can restart. As to the other questions, take a look at the -34 TM's. They are pretty good.
Re-read your...
Good job. I've used my M817 setup a couple of times. I use steel shoes and have done some "ditch digging" in our gravel road. I am interested in how your caster wheels work. My plow and mount added 3500 lbs to the 817. I have a 27,300 scale ticket, empty with full fuel and my carcass inside.
Be careful what gaskets you glue with "yellow death." I had a problematic intake manifold I glued into a small block chevy. Took literally hours to get out. Ended up splitting the gasket in the middle, leaving gasket and glue in equal amounts on the manifold and cylinder head. Real bad ordeal.
Just an observation, for what it is worth. I live 11 miles from the DynoJet research manufacturing shops and (see my "handle") regularly take my high school advanced auto students there to see their R&D and manufacturing facilities. I take something from my personal stable (70 GTO, 70 GTO Judge...
We have encountered similar issues with smaller trucks in my shop. Ensure the hole is clean to the bottom then get a torx bit larger than the stripped hole. Grind the bit flat on the end and drive it firmly into the plug. Many times this works. When that fails get a socket extension closest to...
I will echo the rubber fuel line deterioration fix. Had a similar problem and looked at the lines at the selector valve. All looked OK so I unhooked lines from filter inlet and from each tank. I pressurized the lines with air to unplug. I noticed slight weeping from the lines after pressure...
I live in a mountain subdivision where the residents share plowing duties using pickups. I bought this beauty after nearly a year of procrastination when I found a 12 foot Washau plow at a local auction, rationalizing how much easier this would move snow. I took both to a local welder/fabricator...
