Woo-hoo, air lockers! Nice! What is your intended application for the truck. I think the gear change might be very desirable, unless you will have a higher gross weight and/or operating off road.
How much water are you hauling? These trucks were never designed to run fast on the highway, but they have great power, torque and gearing for low-speed off-road use. Real power improvement will only come from 400 cummins w/ turbo!
The small red wire must be for 12V system. It was attached in different places, but I think any of those middle terminals would yield 12V (they are all jumped together).
First order of business was to charge/check the batteries. I took some pictures of the connections for my reference, but thought others might benefit from these too.
