Front axle front companion flange leak, M809-series

I just finished my second replacement of the oil seal on my M818's front axle's front companion flange. However, I am still getting a leak during longer trips when the axle warms up and gear oil flows easier. The leak originates behind the companion flange deflector, obviously from the seal...

    M809-series (M818) Air Brake Retrofit

You would have to go up to 16.5 x 7 s-cams. All the M939-series trucks are 15" diameter. Seeing how the the same spider for the wedge brakes is used across all incarnations of the M939-series and the M809 and the M939A1/A2 axles are the same, then the spiders, s-cam brackets, s-cams and chambers...

I think the Air Force wins the biggest truck award...

I found this Boeing document. It goes into detail on how the truck was operated with some "propeller head" info too. It was not a launching vehicle. It provided transportation and emplacement into launching structures.

What have you done to your 5 ton this week?

I upgraded my M818's rear S-cam brakes to outboard drums. https://www.steelsoldiers.com/threads/m809-series-m818-air-brake-retrofit.140055/page-6 See post 102 and 104 for the details.

    M809-series (M818) Air Brake Retrofit

Rear outboard drums, continued... Machining the hub: In order for the hub stud flange to fit inside the outboard brake drum, the flange needs to be turned down. I had the flange turned down to 13.010” OD which affords plenty of clearance on the drum back plate inner diameter (I placed a hub...

    M809-series (M818) Air Brake Retrofit

So, with the help of Member Glenngineer, I have figured it all out. We now have rear outboard brake drums adding more ease of maintenance to an already more reliable brake system. This new mod, however, will require some modifications to existing equipment and purchase of new parts. You will...

    M939A2 Front Hub/Spindle Compatibility

I want to convert my front axle to outboard brake drums. My M818 is currently equipped with M939/M939A1 wedge brakes. The simplest route is to convert to the M939A2 hub/drum combination. I am not looking for a functioning CTIS system. I know that the brake spiders, air chambers and shoes are...

    M809-series 33si Alternator Install

Your welcome. Knowing the part numbers is half the battle of any project.

    M809-series 33si Alternator Install

Your welcome! Thank you or the tips! I used the same belts. That's one reason why I liked your install is because it eliminates that tedious step. Yeah, I am not too hip with that exposed positive cable post either. I'll probably do something similar.

    M809-series 33si Alternator Install

With the engine bracket and alternator installed, I turned to the adjusting rod. The adjusting rod is attached to the alternator with a 1/2"-13 x 2 1/2" Gr. 8 bolt and Gr. 8 washer. The top wing is threaded, so inserted and tightened this bolt from back to front. A 1/2"-13 serrated flange...

    M809-series 33si Alternator Install

I picked up a Delco-Remy 33si alternator, Cummins p/n 3400698, to replace the OEM alternator on my M818. My existing alternator was not failing, but I wanted to be ahead of that game. I have also followed some installs on both M809 and M939-series trucks with the NHC250. I liked the results...

    M809-series (M818) Air Brake Retrofit

All right my loyal followers, I am closing in a rear outboard brake drum solution with the help of Brother Glenngineer. It's not all locked down yet. Be forewarned that the solution will require machining of the drive hub in order for the chosen drum to properly pilot to the hub. Next step is...
