It's a resistor. As noted above, some alternators have them, some don't. Here's a link to my alternator rebuild thread so you can see the insulators that are used in an isolated ground alternator.

The alternator is very easy to rebuild. If you decide you need to rebuild your alternator, I have the kits for sale. If you buy another alternator, make sure you keep your old one. They are not available anymore and you may need it for parts (rear casting).
There is a link to my classified ad...
An isolated ground alternator will have two insulated outputs on the back. One red for B+ and one black for B-. On the stock alternator there's also a second post terminal that accepts a push on connector. Sometimes there is also a case ground bolt.
If the alternator you bought only has a...
About 6 months ago the 24 volt transformer rectifier on my M915A1’s alternator quit working. Since the only thing 24 volts (other than the military trailer lights) on this truck is the starter, I didn’t worry about it and just put the second set of batteries in the series chain on charge...
My M373 trailer is missing a couple of brake system parts. As it turns out, James is in the process of changing his M373's axle. He didn't need the brake parts any more and graciously offered to give them to me. I made the trip to Interlachen yesterday and picked them up. James also threw in a...
I eyeballed it. If you thin it a cup (the paint cup on the gun) at the time, it's probably not an once. You will be able to tell when it is spraying correctly. You will also need to clean the filter under the paint cup periodically because it will clog.
Pressure wash it and then paint. I used the same gun to spray my M929. You may need to thin the paint it a little with water. It doesn't take much, so be careful not to add too much.
If you convert it to 12 volts, I would just run one alternator. Unless you have a big electrical load and need the extra amp capacity, there's no point in wearing out two alternators at the same time.
Sparky1, what you need is a solenoid in the B+ line that disconnects the batteries to the truck, controlled with either with a separate switch, or the ignition switch. I have one in the 12 volt supply on my M915A2 because the tachograph and other drains kill the batteries if the truck is not...
Here is an easy way to remember thread direction for removing the lug nuts. With the lug wrench on the nut and the handle pointing straight up, pull towards the back of the truck to loosen the lug nuts. This is true for either side.
You need a big container to catch the oil.
Any heavy truck 15/40 oil will work, they are all good; I buy whats on sale. All of my trucks have had different brands of oil in them over the years with no problems. I usually get Rotella T 15W-40 or Delo 400.
