Just found this thread and read through it. Good reading and a great trip. Good motivation for the trip in your first post, I can relate to that.
Doing such long legs, you are getting a few problems seemingly "all in one", while others have the same repairs spread out over the a few years...
MC cleaned, painted and rebuilt
I removed outside rust, then had the MC overnight in a bucket with water and baking soda using an old mobile phone charger to do some electrolysis and clean all rust inside.
After that, I softly honed the inside of the cylinder to make everything smooth...
Trying to figure out what goes where: I have too many parts.
Above right is how the seals - gaskets for the hydraulic piston rod are shown in the TM, below how it really looks.
Below, attached the hydraulic piston to the rod. I did it before putting the spring on, is easier.
Than...
Slave cylinder cap assembly
Sounds very simple according the TM.
1. Clamp slave cylinder cap (1) in vise.
2. Put check valve (2), spring (3) and washer (4) in slave cylinder cap (1).
3. Push down spring (3) . Put in snapring.
but it is a PITA
The spring is rather strong, and the snapring...
I went with the whole set to a small company for hydraulic systems; the people there know us and like to help. First reaction after seeing the wick: from which museum did you get that? Then they offered to make a complete new piece which would replace all this with one piece of steel and one...
any progress on either air pack rebuild?
I am busy with it myself and am wondering about the packing wick included in the rebuild kit and any other problems you had.
Maybe make it a next rule: runner up will be nominated automatically UNLESS the owner ops out?
the discussion is more interesting than just add a bump to get the thread back up top
I will be posting about this in the weekend, but the Dutch company Reomie is winding down at an amazing speed, most of the trucks are gone or dismantled, shipped in containers all over the world, but mainly Africa. Some parts are also going to the USA, because its cheaper here and the USA is...
Packing wick for air pack piston
Finally, I have time and all missing parts and new parts together to re-assemble the air pack.
Question about the "packing wick", which is part of the air pack piston assembly.
My original air pack has a very thin packing wick, the kit has a wick about 2...
This is a great idea.
One suggestion: make this announcement not only a sticky but glue it permanently to the top of the Today's Posts thread and to the top of the forum section it is in now. I found this post only after the second time running through Today's Post and would have missed it...
Update: 41 M39 SNs found in VIN threads 2008 - 2012
I now completed the Vin threads from 2008 through 2012. Included also are some trucks offered for sale and SN provided to me by PM from SteelSoldiers owners.
I now have SNs and date of manufacturing of 41 M39 5-tons.
SN with less than nine...
You probably are right, but they could run parallel for some time, one or two years maybe. Kaiser would start with the first 800s and still have their contract for the M39 to fulfill. However, by the time they were taken over in the early 1970s by AMC it would definitely have stopped already...
serial number comparison
wasn't close to the truck yet, hopefully I can check tomorrow.
And now for something interesting.
I checked the VIN Info threads for 2009 and 2010 completely, and 2012 partly. And some 5-tons offered for sale where the SN was mentioned. I found 28 M39 5-tons, and...
A form of "sudden death"; the first who get a vote wins?
Anyway, lets enjoy the winner; still a lot of months and years left for all of us to try again and vote again. Or maybe a "runner up" competition for all those that got second during the year?
Do you have a pic from this so I know where to look and how it looks?
In some other threads, I read that what I call serial number also in some of the 5-tons could contain information about original production year and body type. And that the serial numbers of the older trucks are actually...
I am not sure the truck was in Europe before 1986. According the hood number from 1973 to 1986, the truck belonged to the 368th Engineer Battalion with headquarters in Londonderry, New Hampshire. I don't have complete information yet but I did not find reference to them being in that time in Europe.
