    restore autosave

Happened again. All looks ok, I seem to be logged in, start write a reply, then decide to "go advanced" and suddenly up comes the warning it is not possible because the token has expired (and yes, the remember me box is always checked). Reload, or back button or whatever, but my carefully...

Awesome Rust Removal for intricate parts

De-rusting some of the hydraulic control valve assembly of a 5-ton Trying to get the rust of the actuating lever of my M51A2. Reading up the alternatives including vinegar and molasses, steelypip came up with the idea of electrolysis and I thought to give it a try. Checking older threads...

    Pulling off steering wheel

I was thinking about that, but with the steering wheel being of some kind of non-metal material (not really plastic), I was afraid to melt the thing. Might try that later. However, it might not be necessary; the line-up seems to be ok. If we ever get enough funding, I might take the whole...

    Pulling off steering wheel

With this official puller, somebody ever experienced that you destroyed the steering wheel and still the thing did not come loose? On the underside of the wheel, close to the jacket, you can see some shiny metal. For me, it looks like that is part of the bearings, so I try avoid hitting that or...

M51A2 hydraulic power steering problem ross hydrapower

Took an hour off and checked on the truck. Took another picture of the mess and then made a nice contraption on our vacuum cleaner to reach those awkward places to clean the area before taking out the two washers. Seeing it the first time, you would not think anything can be taken out of...

M51A2 hydraulic power steering problem ross hydrapower

Actually, its only the area around the control housing that is rusty, inside the control valve unit things look very nice to me. If I had the $$ and lived in the Netherlands or the US, I would replace the whole steering unit in one go including gear box and steering shaft. However, I haven't and...

M51A2 hydraulic power steering problem ross hydrapower

Did not have time to do some work yet (taking care of my sick grandson), will be Sunday. The TM did needed some deciphering here and I am trying to avoid doing something stupid and maybe messing things up, so just a quick check if you don't mind. Below is the earlier pic of the mess on the...

    My Battery Runs Down?

12.6 volt is not very much. When I started and thought they were loaded, I had similar. After switching from slow to quick and back and leaving them on the loader for a few days they came up to 13.6V, even a few hours after the loader was disconnected. Maybe that is typical for these armasafe...

    Code Enforcement Threat

I am getting Czech veteran papers for my car now. That process includes me having to become member of something like the national veteran cars register. The Netherlands have something similar. These are not state, but recognized large non-profits mostly with political lobby as well. Does not the...

M51A2 hydraulic power steering problem ross hydrapower

That is what I miss here, somebody to work together with, including the shouting. I used to discuss these things with my brother but he passed away 3 years ago. Let's take this stupid thing one step further. The steering got worse and worse quickly, that is, only a few miles driving but months...

M51A2 hydraulic power steering problem ross hydrapower

Thanks, now you mention it, almost did something very stupid here. Turning it would change the positions and the lever would not fit good anymore or be in the wrong position. Is that the problem? A small magnet might help clean the stuff out also.

M51A2 hydraulic power steering problem ross hydrapower

I will clean it and try to get things out, then try turning the wheel (without starting the engine, that would be a nice mess). If the wheel turns smoothly or at least acceptable, I will leave it at that and rebuild the stuff. Now it is loose and clean, taking it apart again is not much of a...

M51A2 hydraulic power steering problem ross hydrapower

Swiss, what kind of grease do you use? Doesn't that give problems with the oil? Do you have the Napa number for those rings? I can try to get something fitting here, but I am not sure if I can trust these "no problem, they will fit and are ok" stories here. Cleaning it up probably means...

    Pulling off steering wheel

I thought that this should do the trick as well. This is actually the first thing that I have really trouble with getting it off. For the rest (touch wood) all nuts and bolts came free relatively easy

M51A2 hydraulic power steering problem ross hydrapower

Taking apart the control valve assembly Might as well find out how the inside of the control valve assembly looks. Took me 20 minutes to get the pin out on which the actuating lever rotates. Not only stuck, but also quite strong rust edges in the spaces between lever and valve house. Read...

    Steering Hydraulic Leak

    Can I join that club?

M51A2 hydraulic power steering problem ross hydrapower

Removed Hydraulic Control Valve Assembly I think I found at least where part of the problem is. Had to buy a fitting hex key in the big town. Even with the proper tool it is still an awkward position to loosen the four bolts that hold the control valve assembly onto the control housing...

    Pulling off steering wheel

I know, but in the Czech Republic its a bit difficult to get a US military steering wheel puller. Regardless if I damage the steering wheel, a non-military puller gives also enough power but it still does not come off.

    Pulling off steering wheel

I tried a standard large size 3-leg heavy puller on my steering wheel. Had it soaked before in WD 40 for days, hitting the top of the puller under pressure to make vibrations, hit the steering wheel from below rather hard, chipped parts of the plastic from the steering wheel underside (to the...

    My Battery Runs Down?

My batteries are back up, but it took several days of loading, then a bit of use (the truck started with immediately without any hiccup) and back on the loader. The pulse-tech loader-maintainer is on the Christmas list.
