So mine is 1973 M51A2 stationed in Europe at least for part of the time.
Probably the history was a bit more varied than I thought, since there seem to be a few layers of paint on top of each other. Besides, the never used brand new spare tire has a brownish top coat with a greenish paint...
brake pedal pressure gone after winter parking air pressure ok
Started a new thread, then thought it would be better continue this since it deals with similar problems.
Subtitle says it all. Started to work on the truck, build up air pressure, pushed the brake pedal: nada nic nothing zilch...
The mentioned TM...35 is digitized by google and is now in the public domain, that is, free of copyright restrictions for personal use. You can download it for free without restrictions or having to have a google account.
So if you desperately need the additional info from the pics, this might...
This link gives the TM...35 with good pics on-screen instead of the grey and blacked-out pics from the manual on this side. To be honest, did not help very much for what I was looking, but it might be useful to others.
I did replace the oil and while trying had the wheels turning left and right, but the problem remained. That was in July 2012, truck has not been driving more than a few miles since then, still the same problem in summer 2013 and now.
Part of the problem is the sometimes intimidating size of the parts and being alone here without quick solutions if something breaks or needs replacement. Taking a deep breath, let's do it.
Taking the air hose for the arctic heater away helped a lot for getting as better look. Taking pictures...
Thanks Ron, I was hoping you would chime in.
Just went trough the TMs again with a magnifying glass to figure out the steps. TM ...35 page 151 actually has a schedule showing this relieve valve installed similar to mine. Reading a bit further, it might be indeed installed later (by the...
Two useful websites to help translate the codes.
The Federal Standard paint spec site gives the RGB Hex code of that specific paint, universal color coding system. On the RGB Hex site, you can put the hex code in the search field completely at the top of the page, click get info and you get all...
Swiss, is this the same assembly as on the M51A2 multifuel? Any further pics on taking the assembly out and putting it back? I am starting with the same job this week, so am looking through all threads for possible heads-up and save short-cuts.
Starting again to get my steering in order. In short, left turn is without problem, right turn needs two persons to haul the steering wheel around. Hydraulic oil according TMs and recommendations here replaced and should be without air. Adjusting nut tightened to get rid of free play; worked...
Reviving this thread; I am looking into the same problem. Left turn without problem, right turn in begin was difficult, now I need two persons to get the steering wheel around. This thread ends without clear answer on cause and solution (unless I missed something). Memphisdoug, did you manage to...
Thanks for getting us back, spent a few days supervising an exhibition, so a lot of free time in an out of office situation, thought to catch up with SteelSoldiers...sh#$%$#t.
No criticism, just technical interest and trying to protect our own sites against something like this. Shouldn't a host...
Sounds good. Your earlier pictures show the exhaust just in front of the right rear wheels. Never liked that place. If you would be passing a cyclist while getting up speed, you would either suffocate them or blow them off the road (or at least paint them a bit black )
That's one heck of a nice truck,:drool: but I am missing at least one nice discreet (green) exhaust stack sticking up, two would be better. Wouldn't mind doing something like that but the M51A2 is too short for that kind of tricks. Have to find me a long-bed truck
Since October last year (adding anti-freeze coolant)......
 . ...... NIC ....NADA....NOTHING........
and its already mid June. Getting very frustrated here.
Would like to say a lot of things about it, but the moderators would bleeb every second bleeping word...
Two brothers in the Netherlands (both well over 70) bought lots of old surplus stuff when it was still cheap. The brother buying the European surplus is still buying. However, he now is buying the newer stuff coming free and after some modifications, virtually all of it is going as drivable...
