You can pull the front valve cover and make sure both valves on #1 are closed when you have the harmonic balancer mark lined up. Soaking it in a hot parkerizing bath would do it. You could try an ultrasonic cleaning vat, that may separate the aluminum from the iron.

That is normal. Line up your mark, pull the head, then roll the motor over one time and reinstall the head. See what that does.

They should have been a 10-32 if memory serves.
