I have cruised a few Cummins sites and it looks like an expensive adapter. the common wisdom is without allot of upgrades the 24V will tear up the 4L80 because of the massive torque...
I am just trying g to figure if this could be from sitting so long or if it has happened after you drove the truck 3,000 miles.
Do you run a fuel lubricant? if not you should be.
Have you checked the idle speed?
Does it stop smoking and run evenly when warmed up?
Usually a bad (leaking) injector...

The air filter does not sit on the HMMWV intake manifold, there would be no room for it.
That C4 engine is rather anemic at 235HP would not be much of an upgrade, I was wondering why it was so cheap.
