You can take an ohm meter and confirm you have continuity between the sending unit body and the engine block. Personally I only use Teflon tape on domestic water pipe, everything else gets thread sealer.

You still have not said if you removed the check valves, and also if you have monitored the out flow from the IP return fitting to make sure it is flowing and remains flowing until the engine dies, that is a pretty simple thing to do.
