Sure, take off the shift lever, take off the floor pan, take the top off the tranny and have a look... I would expect one of the rods in the cover is stuck or something simple like that...should take ya about 15 minutes.
Lots of M35 Gassers were updated with kits by the NG and AR outfits. Had engine, OD tranny, fuel tank, gauge panel, steering gear?, and a bunch of neat stuff...including a new left fender with clearance for the IP and requiring a heater mounting plate... Many of these outfits did not install...

be sure to put the little sleeves in the block and install the exhaust and intake parts separately, loose on one another..and use the correct OEM fasteners... after you have installed them and run them in and retorqued the fasteners, then you can tighten the bolts which hold the two...
the burner conversions, I believe are for gasoline... the "carb" has a return line which will clog when the oil gets cold and you will have to store the fuel in the tent... for sure...I have been there and burned several tents in 1963-66 due to drunk First Sgts..etc....
