I actually would love to do something like this, and I still take riders for events - very selectively. At a few comments along the lines of those above to try to give some perspective.

Depending on the tow vehicle, those neat looking Humvee tires are no treat. When I changed to civvies, the trailer pulled much better. Might be part of the problem.

Don't feel hosed, and it isn't limited to contractors. I have a 1951 M37 that was an Army rebuild and there's Army Bondo on the passenger's door. You can tell because it's an original Army paint job over top of it. I think these were probably surplussed out before they started with...
I've read the threads on axle swaps but I have no experience with them. I'd probably just put on civvy rims and tires and see where that got me and decide from there. It's not expensive When I took the runflats off my 101A3 and put those on, I found a huge improvement on the lunette banging...
Take a look at ETrailer.com for some ball-hitch surge brake ideas. Also the popular, unmentionable auction site. Look for 'brake actuator' or 'surge brake actuator.'
They ain't cheap if new. I found these trailers tow a bunch different on a light truck when they have standard passenger...
