After reading through the forum to learn more about super-singling out my truck, I realized I should ensure I have run flats in the front for safety reasons. The rears are another story and don't really need the run flats.
So before I pull the trigger on buying a bunch of individual wheels and...
Simp- Thanks. I'm still learning about these beasts. When the transfer case is in neutral, it disconnects the drivetrain from the tranny/engine, correct? And thus no need to pull a driveshaft when towing long distance?
A question I forgot to ask in my first post: I assume these transmission have no locks. In other words, whether it was shut down in N or any gear, the truck can still be winched onto a trailer without busting a pinion lock or such? I know I have to cage the brakes...just asking about the...
I put a listing on uship to get bids for trailering the M925 the ~155 miles to San Antonio. Highest bid was $1900 (more than I paid for the truck) and low bids are hovering around $1100. I'm surprised the low bids really aren't that low as they figure out to just under $7/mile. I hoped there...
To use a trailer, I thought the vehicle must be under it's own power to drive itself up the ramp. A trailer/hotshot service would be much easier...just not sure of the how to get it up on the trailer.
I bought a parts M925 truck at an auction and planned to tow it home with my good M923. Of course, my job just blew up the day after I paid for the truck and I'm now not able to spend the time to tow the parts truck out of the auction yard within the next week or so- and that means I'll be...
I went after the M939 mainly for aesthetic and nostalgic reasons. It just looks and sounds like a military truck and it's what I remember as a brand new recruit. Current series trucks have more creature comforts but a big old boxy overgrown pickup truck was what I wanted. And my M939 is...
I appreciate the post-run check, especially on older equipment as seals eventually wear out, lubrication oils seep out, grease breakdown, etc. It takes no more than a few seconds to walk around and feel (IR gun) each hub, look for leaks, smell for burning/odd smells, listen for heat...
It's just sitting at my dad's shop in SA, which is about 10 miles from where I bought it. I plan to do some work on it and it's much easier to do it at the shop where we a forklift, overhead crane, various lathes, mills, etc. My house in Oak Hill is a a regular residential house so working on...
Two weeks...and it's still in San Antonio!!! rofl
I'm still learning about these trucks, but I know my way around a wrench and machine shop. Happy to help as possible. By the way, we have some land in northern hays county (off Hamilton Pool) which is why i bought my truck. The wife doesn't...
Yeah, I get it's being anal but it's only a five min check for a great peace of mind that i'm not toasting anything- especially since I'm responsible for repairs and not Uncle Sam. I read a few posts about engine temp gauges being off (too high) and freaking out the owner. After I feel good...
As I'm learning my new-to-me M923, I want to ensure the operating temps of the engine and tranny are within limits (and my dash gauges are accurate-ish). I'm assuming I can run the truck on a road about 5-10 mins then just take my IR gun and hit the block in multiple places to measure engine...
mstepchinski- i'm in oak hill (SW part of Austin) and recently picked up a M923. So if you need a Soldier B, let me know and I'll try to come out and wrench with ya.
Also, I'm jealous of the real dump- i'm thinking of adding a dump feature to my M923 just to haul stuff here/there.
You guys are posting some great pics and really making me want one (or two like Fuzzytoaster!). The only wreckers I dealt with in the Army where the HEMTT ones that had the crane right behind that massive tow boom. I vaguely remember FMTV wreckers with a knuckle boom but maybe I'm getting them...
