In my experience, this is caused by moisture entering into the exhaust and shooting out upon start up. I don't believe this is caused by anything discussed here. It happens on trucks without a catalytic converter, too.
Eastern Surplus in Philly has running take-out 6.5 NA engines. Last I checked, they were going for around $2K, maybe just under. A friend bought an engine from him and they sent him a video of it running. I'd check with Eastern (ask for Bill Peaslee).

I had a nicer M416 trailer that I sold to another SteelSoldiers member for $750 without a title. I had the paperwork to get the title and told him it would be $1000 with a title. He opted for the former.

If cost isn't an issue, or if I planned to put a lot of miles on my truck, then synthetic would be my choice. However, personally, I always use non-synthetic. I drive all of my trucks a sum total of a few thousand miles a year...so not much per truck. I almost always have to change my oil due...

Maybe you could look for a residue REV truck that has the steering box on it. Then, you'd have other parts you may need or you could sell them. Some of the residue trucks go fairly cheaply, but then you still will have to add shipping from either CA or GA.
