    More unusual stuff

Great Jed, would like to see another one. I looked inside the one I took pictures of just to make sure I wasn't seeing sun-bleached camo job but nope, those are the real colors. Jones

    Intercooler?

Sounds like a worthwhile project though I think there may be more than just plumbing one in. Reason I say that is; my Cummins turbodiesel is an intercooled engine. I put the engine into a non-intercooled Dodge and was amazed at how gutless it was. Are intercooled engines "de-tuned"? Would it...

    Compression tool for connectors

You might check on ebay for a Daniels Mfg Corp. (or similar maker) "AF8 Crimping Tool" to correctly crimp on the metal connectors. There are two sizes of these tools, make sure you get the one for 26 to 12 ga. wire. Look at an original connector and you'll see the four distinctive little dimples...

    809 series valve adjustment....

Hey Ryan, if you want to email me I'll send you a pdf file that has the M809 valve adjustment procedures in it. caleonard@earthlink.net Sounds like there's a little more to it than just a simple "roll it 'til the valve is closed" job. Jones

    More unusual stuff

I spotted a deuce on my trip to Barstow with a really different camo scheme. It's ex-USMC 332453 as per the hood markings. Main color is a bright, almost grass green. Second (predominent earth-tone) is close to a Caterpillar yellow and third (shadow) is black. What did I see? Jones

    Amber main headlamp bulbs

Made a trip to Barstow Truck and came back with a bunch of pictures to share. While there, I saw a couple of 5 tons with amber headlight bulbs (Wagner 4860A). Any ideas as to the purpose? Can't imagine anyplace that foggy all the time. Can't seem to get the pictures added to my post so, anybody...

    Transmission options

Hello again Wick246, The Allisons come in a variety of configurations to suit one's needs and the 545s are about the same length as the 5-speed (will tape mine to have some definate dimensions). I chose an earlier one so I would have a mechanical modulator and little or no electronics. The 545s...

    Transmission options

If you're considering an automatic; I put an Allison AT545 against my 465 and I think my notes say that it's an SAE#3 pattern. Will check it to make sure. Allison puts out a whole package of Allison AT545 adaption notes for all the little details like torque converter flex plate design, spacing...

    Axle changes ?!?

Thanks Ken, It's looking more and more like I'm gonna be putting this back together from the stripped-frame-on-jack-stands stage so axle and possibly even eng/trans/t-case placement is still up in the air. I know it sounds like a big project but what the heck, it keeps me off the streets at...

    Simple Problem

For an on-the-road fix. If the copper seal isn't too chewed up you can anneal it by heating up to "way too hot to touch" with a small hand torch and dropping it into a bucket of water. (Copper anneals just the opposite of steel). This'll turn it back to "dead soft" and it should seal OK again...

I REALLY need a set of 5t double beadlocks

Yep, 10 hole with countersink on both sides of the lug stud hole so as to run them deep dish in or out, 10" wide between flanges and as close as I can figure, with about a 4" to 4 1/2" offset when measured from the wheel centerline. Hayes' rim for the HEMTTs has a 3" offset but the Budds will...

I REALLY need a set of 5t double beadlocks

If you have your heart set on beadlocks then check with Barstow Truck. They have 'em but they try to hold them back for M-900 series trucks they build. Otherwise, have you considered Budd 20X10 three-piece wheels? Hayes made a very similar wheel for the HEMTTs which I have a machinist's drwg. of...

    Axle changes ?!?

Hello to all... I'm starting on my seventh deuce and this one, I want to play with a little. Has anyone got any experience putting M-900 series axles with their springs and hangers under a deuce? These are the BIG, full air brake, ten hole Budd wheel babies and I'm concerned about axle to oil...

383 Paint texture question and more questions!

The gritty texture you're feeling is silica & cristobolite and some other equally unpleasant abrasives added to CARC paint to make it more scuff resistant and to enhance it's low IR reflectivity properties. Granted, motor pools are not Autorama grade paint shops but the new paints aren't...

    Paint for Deuce

Just a tip or two on using CARC paints beyond the short pot life and "use a respirator" warnings. CARC paint, until very recently (the newest version uses polymer micro-beads), has had silica (ground quartz), cristobolite, chromium and some other pretty abrasive stuff in it for the texture part...
