I can also see why it's been suggested to vent the box. There is surface rust buildup on the bottom of the inside of the case.
OK, kind of tough to see in the pic :-D but I have a cb mounted below the dash in the center. I have it wired into the truck speakers under the top of the dash pad. The antenna is mounted next to the military whip on the military antenna mount. The cable runs through the grommet in the top, same...
Put in a gasser.
Seriously, it's basically a big air compressor so anything you can do to get more air in and out will help. Freer flowing air cleaner, freer flowing exhaust will help.
Watch out for those foreign made body parts. The money you save is usually not worth the hassle. Also use Classic Industries.

Thanks guys. Figure I'd end up having to make one, not a problem. I've got some steel tubing I can cut down. The key is having the right length. Stacking washers is also an option, but I'm going for more of a professional look... lol
Also, make sure the mounting flange on the rocker cover is not deformed. If the cover bolts have been over-tightened in the past, the thin metal may be bent.
Anyone have a parts cucv with the spacer that runs between the passenger side alternator and the engine block that they could part with? Mine is missing as shown in the picture. If not, an accurate length for the spacer would help too. Kinda tough to tighten without one. Thanks!
