    Radio antenna mount question

I'm restoring a ex-Army 1955 M38A1. When acquired, it had a antenna mounting bracket on the left rear quarter. I am removing it. The MV expert doing the work doesn't know if the holes for the bracket were drilled at the factory or were they done post delivery. He thinks (but is not sure) that...

    USAF Strata Blue

wheelspinner I agree. I grew up on Air Bases, and they all look pretty correct. Back in the day, paints faded and I'm sure it did not help that a heavy duty work truck would likely not get the waxing or care a "Air Police" truck or staff car would receive. I wanted to post these as a general...

    USAF Strata Blue

Here is a collection of test strips. The colors are tough to photograph , they seem to change color in every light, but show the basic differences. The labels are top to bottom.

What have you done to your JEEP today

I've seen it on a recent KW catalog cover. It helped give me the idea to do one that way. I have since found online a story by the owner of that Jeep. he admitted it was a custom color in a shade he liked (brighter) and not military correct. Plus, I'm doing it the markings of my dad's MATS Wing...

What have you done to your JEEP today

While the mechanics are being done, I thought I'd get proactive to figure out the best Strata Blue paint. So far I have samples from Gillespie and PPG. LVP comes next week. There is a noticeable difference in the two. Also, found a supplier for the military markings decal set. I want to have...

    USAF Strata Blue

So far I have a freshly painted sample of Rapco/Gillespie and PPG. Both are on identical surfaces. So far, The Gillespie is a shade or two lighter...maybe more of a gray tint. PPG 17634 is closer to midnight blue. Next week, I'll see what LVP is like.

    USAF Strata Blue

Anyone have any opinions on where to get a correct match? It's FSN. 15045 Several seem to think the Gillespie mix (also sold by RAPCO) isn't quite right in terms of color and it's not glossy enough. Anyone have opinions on that? How about LVP or other makers of specialized paint? Or other...

What have you done to your JEEP today

Maverick1701 it does my heart good to see a nice young family spending time together, especially in something so all-American, so universal .... I do miss Texas! I hope you and your family enjoy the Jeep for many miles and many years.

    Decals

Many of the parts suppliers offer decal sets for the A1. One sells you two sets in case you make an error. I want a complete set, Underwood and everything else. Anyone have recommendations? Alsi, there is a decal on the battery box, I can't check what it says, as the Jeep is in the shop, but...

What have you done to your JEEP today

Buying more parts.... Horn switch, stop light switch, radiator cap and just for fun...A new horn cap. And importantly, I figured out a period correct seatbelt set up for my USAF-marked M38A1. I'm marking it for when it was built (1955), so it was a challenge given the lack of aftermarket seat...

    M38A1 Engine bay photos needed....correct/stock

Hi We will be detailing the engine bay of my newly acquired M38A1 soon. We could use some help with decal placement and to double check colors. If you have photos of a correct stock engine compartment, please post them. Also, if thou could point me in the right direction for a correct A1...

    Cleaning old gauges

I'm a MV newcomer, and have started work on a 1955 M38A1. It doesn't have a authentic hood number, so I'm having it refinished as an Air Force example in Strata Blue. I finally sourced the two period correct (as listed in the 1956 parts manual...not later "MS" units) gauges I needed and found a...

Just got USMC M38a1…could it have been in Air Force?

Yes, it could have been diverted from the USMC. One question I would have us what year is it? If it's a 1953, there is more likelyhood of the USAF getting an emergency diversion because of the war. Remember, the AF probably had fewer Jeeps than the Marines. If it's a later truck, I think a...

What is a “motor Pool” CJ5?

During my career, 1981 - 2001, the only USAF Jeep I was was a CJ-8 open bed pickup with fiberglass half cab, assigned to the base communications squadron. if you go online, there is a shot of a CJ-5 (complete with tailgate) on a flightline during the Vietnam era....you can tell by the aircraft...

What have you done to your JEEP today

Well...I FINALLY BOUGHT ONE. A unit built in March, 1955. Rust free, unmodified body with just under 50k miles on the odometer. I bought it at a very VERY good price. No history with it, the Army numbers are long gone...which made it easy for me to decide to paint it in USAF Strata Blue. It...
