Most newer controlers have the diode built in. but you should be able to put one in the wire from the controler to brake light switch to solve the problem . Unless there is a issue in how he converted the mil plug to civy . The easist test would be to unhook the wire to the brake light switch...
If your down south the car batteries will work . But in cold weather just buy the 6TL's and have the cranking power you need to start it in the cold . When the batteries are to small for the application it will shorten the starter life .

Were you pulling sinlge line or doubled , hydrualic winches will quit pulling when maxed out. P.T.O.'s tend to keep pulling till they break something.
