Most newer controlers have the diode built in. but you should be able to put one in the wire from the controler to brake light switch to solve the problem . Unless there is a issue in how he converted the mil plug to civy . The easist test would be to unhook the wire to the brake light switch...

It may be a issue with the controler backfeeding through the wire from controler to brake light switch .

There is a drain on the primary which should be drained on a regular basis to remove water. that's covered in the TM also.

I would check the brake light switch first .

If your down south the car batteries will work . But in cold weather just buy the 6TL's and have the cranking power you need to start it in the cold . When the batteries are to small for the application it will shorten the starter life .

You could tee in a fitting to charge the air system with a portable compressor . As it is your brakes are going to work poorly also , no assist .
