Sounds like the overrunning clutch on the front of the alternator (pulley) is bad, you should be able to turn it one direction but not the other with motor off.
Unfortunately that is a relatively high dollar item..
You are stopping too abruptly, after a few years of driving now I have to force my truck to do that to show someone that phenomenon otherwise it just does not happen.
100% normal, it is the slack between the inboard brakes and the wheels due to the half shafts and geared hubs.
You should learn how to correctly stop, tapering the brake pressure as you stop so that does not happen.
That system has an electric heater water valve that is notorious for failing, many just replace it with a manual valve.
It does sound like you have a short, it is time to download the AC schematics and start to troubleshoot the problem by disconnecting all the components and then re-connecting...
Those things are usually VERY dependable as long as the float floats and moves on the shaft freely.
It is simply a magnet that floats up and down on the shaft tripping reed switches connected to different values of resistors which are normally good for literally millions of "operations"

Notice it lists the rims they fit, the early 12 bolt wheels are different.
It is best to replace it, if it looks OK (still round and not flattened) you can sometimes get away with it.
ONLY use the o rings from folks like Kascar, HPG, AMG, they will be red, all the ones I have seen or tried from others are orange and are total crap and do not fit
